Why Teachable is the Best Online Course Platform for Artists to Host their Courses and Memberships4/2/2024 Hey there, fellow creatives! I'm super excited to share with you something that's been a game-changer for me and countless other artists who are looking to expand their reach and impact. If you've been toying with the idea of sharing your expertise through online courses or memberships, you're going to love what I've got to share. Let's dive right into the heart of the matter: why, in my experience, Teachable stands out as the best platform for us visual artists to host our online courses and memberships. And trust me, I'm not just throwing words around here – I've been through the wringer with different platforms, and Teachable has consistently come out on top. For the money and the ease of use, I believe Teachable is the best online course platform for artists on the market today. I currently sell thousands of dollars each month on this platform, so I know it works! Here's why: User-Friendly Vibes First up, let's talk about ease of use. We're artists, right? Our brains are wired to create, to explore the visual and the tactile, not to wrestle with complicated tech. That's where Teachable shines. It's incredibly intuitive, which means you can focus more on crafting your content and less on figuring out how to upload a video or set up a payment gateway. The platform guides you through each step with a friendly hand, making the setup process a breeze. A Visual Artist's Dream Now, onto the visual aspect – because, let's face it, as visual artists, aesthetics matter to us. A lot. Teachable gets that. The platform offers beautifully designed templates that you can customize to match your artistic flair. Whether you're a painter, sculptor, digital artist, or anything in between, your course can look just like your art: unique, professional, and utterly you. Connect and Engage Engagement is key when it comes to online learning, and Teachable nails this by providing tools that help you connect with your students on a deeper level. Discussion forums, quizzes, and comment sections allow for a dynamic learning environment. This means your students aren't just passively watching videos; they're participating, asking questions, and truly engaging with your content. Money Matters Made Easy Let's talk turkey for a moment. We all appreciate simplicity when it comes to handling payments, right? Teachable streamlines the whole process, from setting up different pricing options for your courses to handling international payments. It's all in there, and it's all straightforward. Plus, the platform helps manage the not-so-fun stuff like VAT, sales tax and affiliate payouts, so you can spend more time creating and less time crunching numbers. The Tax Tangle: Untangled! Now, let's take a moment to talk taxes - yes, the dreaded T-word. But stick with me because this is good news. One of the unsung heroes of Teachable's features, and honestly, a huge sigh of relief for us creatives, is how it handles sales tax. You know, that complex web of rates and regulations that can vary wildly from place to place and can be a major headache for anyone selling anything online, let alone our beautiful courses. Teachable steps in as our knight in shining armor here, calculating, collecting, and remitting sales tax on our behalf. And why is this a monumental benefit, you ask? Well, for starters, it frees us from the cumbersome task of keeping up with the ever-changing tax laws and regulations across different jurisdictions. Imagine trying to figure out the specific tax rate for a student in one country, another state, or even a particular city. It's enough to make your head spin! But with Teachable, you don't have to worry about any of that. They've got a team of experts and a robust system in place to handle it all, ensuring compliance with local tax laws, which means one less thing on your already overflowing creative plate. This not only saves you a ton of time and potential headaches but also protects you from the risk of accidental non-compliance, which could lead to fines or legal issues. In essence, this feature allows you to stay focused on what you do best - creating and teaching. It's like having a silent business partner taking care of the nitty-gritty details, so you can concentrate on growing your community and sharing your art with the world. And in a world where simplicity and peace of mind are invaluable, this feature of Teachable truly shines as a beacon for us, the creative educators. So, there you have it, a little golden nugget of information about one of the many reasons Teachable stands out. It's not just about the platform's user-friendliness or its aesthetic appeal; it's also about how it supports you in the backend, handling complex issues like sales tax, so you can thrive in the front, doing what you love. Growing Together Finally, what I love about Teachable is that it feels like a partner in your growth journey. The online course platform doesn't just give you the tools and then wave goodbye; it's packed with resources to help you succeed. From comprehensive guides on course creation to marketing tips, Teachable is there to support you at every step. So, there you have it, my creative comrades – a little insight into why I think Teachable is the top pick for us visual artists looking to spread our wings into the world of online courses and memberships. Remember, the goal isn't just to teach; it's to create a community, share our passion, and, yes, earn a living while we're at it. And with a platform like Teachable, all of that becomes not just possible, but enjoyable. Here's to your success and creativity, always intertwined and inspiring others. Let's make some magic happen on Teachable, shall we? I hope as you research it's benefits for yourself, you'll come to believe, as I do, that Teachable is the best platform out there for artists. ** I personally use Teachable for my online course hosting and love it so much, I became and affiliate for them. Embarking on a career in the arts, especially as a Christian artist, is a journey both profound and complex. This path is not merely about honing your skills or finding your audience; it's about weaving your faith into the fabric of your creations, understanding the delicate interplay between the mastery of your craft and its marketability, and ultimately, trusting in God's guidance through every brushstroke and every decision. In this article, I hope to shed light on these aspects, offering insights and encouragement to help you navigate the intricacies of a flourishing art career. The Essence of Mastery in Art At the heart of any artistic endeavor lies the pursuit of mastery. This is a commitment to excellence, a relentless journey of refining your skills, and a deep dive into the vast ocean of your chosen medium. Mastery is about more than just technique; it's about developing a language of your own, a means to convey the whispers of your soul and the dialogue you share with the Lord. For you, the Christian artist, mastery also embodies your spiritual walk with God. It's a process intertwined with prayer, reflection, and the constant seeking of His wisdom. Your art becomes a vessel, not only for personal expression but as a testimony of faith, a beacon of God's creativity flowing through you. The Dynamics of Marketability While the quest for mastery focuses on the soul's dialogue with the canvas, marketability speaks to the art's conversation with the world. It's the bridge that connects your inner revelations to the hearts and minds of others. Marketability doesn't merely mean selling; it's about resonating, touching lives, and finding a home for your creations beyond the studio walls. Navigating marketability as a Christian artist brings its unique challenges. It's about striking a balance between staying true to your spiritual convictions and understanding the pulse of the market. It's about finding those who seek the depth and meaning your art offers, those who resonate with the stories your works tell and the values they uphold. Part of that interplay is choosing to use language, metaphor and imagery that is not typically seen as Christian, but being free enough to choose what speaks to you and trusting God will use it to speak to others. The Interplay Between Mastery and Marketability The journey between mastering your art and making it marketable is akin to walking a tightrope, with profound personal expression on one side and the broad appeal on the other. Leaning too far towards mastery without a nod to marketability might lead your work to be admired yet unseen by a wider audience. Conversely, focusing solely on what sells might dilute the essence of what you wish to convey, risking the authenticity of your voice. The key lies in harmonizing these aspects. Allow your quest for mastery to be the backbone of your work, infusing it with unparalleled depth and authenticity. Simultaneously, keep a finger on the pulse of the market, understanding that your art does not live in a vacuum but in a vibrant, ever-evolving world hungry for meaning and beauty. Navigating Mastery: Deepening Your Craft 1. Continuous Learning: Mastery is not a destination but a journey. Dedicate yourself to lifelong learning, exploring new techniques, and pushing the boundaries of your creativity. 2. Spiritual Integration: Let your faith guide your artistic journey. See your practice not just as skill development but as a form of worship, a dialogue with the Creator. 3. Authentic Expression: Your unique voice is your most valuable asset. Cultivate it, cherish it, and let it shine through your work. Understanding Marketability: Connecting with the World 1. Audience Engagement: Know who resonates with your work and why. Build connections that go beyond transactions, fostering a community around your art. 2. Market Trends: While staying true to your voice, be aware of the market. Understanding trends can help you find intersections between your artistic integrity and audience interests. 3. Adaptability: Be open to evolving your work, exploring themes, and mediums that might have broader appeal, all while staying rooted in your core values and artistic vision. Bridging Mastery and Marketability To marry the deep, introspective journey of mastering your art with the outward, engaging path of marketability, consider the following strategies: 1. Tell Your Story: Share the journey behind your art. Your personal narrative, intertwined with your faith, can make your work more relatable and engaging. 2. Community Involvement: Engage with both the art community and your faith community. Exhibitions, church events, and online platforms can be fertile ground for both inspiration and audience building. 3. Feedback Loops: Embrace feedback from a diverse array of voices. Constructive criticism can be a powerful tool for growth, helping you fine-tune both your craft and your understanding of the market. 4. Rest in the Process: Remember, both mastery and marketability are marathons, not sprints. Find peace in the unfolding journey, trusting in God's timing and plan for your art and career. Trusting the Journey As you navigate the complex landscape of an art career, remember that your work is a reflection of your walk with In today's fast-paced, competition-driven world, it's easy to get caught up in the endless race for recognition, success, and validation. As an artist and a follower of Jesus, I've often found myself at the crossroads of these societal demands and the gentle whisper of a different path—one that doesn't lead to the spotlight but to the quiet corners of creativity and simplicity. The Struggle with Competition For years, I tried to mold myself into the artist I thought I should be—the one who thrives on competition, constantly seeks the limelight, and measures success by the number of likes, shares, and accolades. But this pursuit left me feeling empty and disconnected from my true self and my faith. The more I chased after external validation, the more I realized that this was not the life I was meant to live. Competition, I found, was not a catalyst for my creativity but a barrier to it. Embracing a Different Reality I've always been most content when I'm in my studio, brush in hand, or sitting at the piano, letting worship melodies flow through me. It's in these moments, away from the clamor and demands of the world, that I feel closest to God and most in tune with the person He created me to be. The natural world, with its unassuming beauty and rhythmic seasons, has been a constant reminder to me of the value of a slower, more intentional way of life—one that values being over doing, and presence over performance. The Lure and Lament of the Limelight I won't deny that there's a certain thrill in being recognized for your work, in having moments where your art is in the spotlight. But I've learned that these moments are fleeting and, more often than not, serve as a reality check. They prompt me to reflect on whether my external successes align with my internal values and whether I'm staying true to my calling to live "low and slow" in a world that's always rushing to the next big thing. A World Loud with Voices As the world grows louder, filled with the cacophony of voices clamoring for attention, the pull to step back grows stronger. This isn't about fear or intimidation; it's about choosing to show up in the world differently, to embody an alternative spirit—one of quiet strength, gentle creativity, and purposeful simplicity. Rejecting the Digital Frenzy The digital age, with its AI-driven content and over-marketed strategies, often feels like a trap for creatives. The pressure to make art that sells, to find the next viral hook, or to game the algorithm can be suffocating. It's a game I no longer wish to play. Instead, I yearn to create art that resonates with the soul, to speak with the voice God has given me, and to impact lives in meaningful, lasting ways. Living Simply, Loving Deeply My aspirations have shifted from seeking external success to embracing a life of simplicity, faith, and genuine creativity. I don't aspire to be the best marketer or the most influential artist. My heart's desire is to live a life that reflects the love of Jesus, to create art that brings joy to myself and others, and to lead my family with kindness and wisdom. Finding Fulfillment in God's Presence The true essence of fulfillment, I've discovered, doesn't come from relentless striving or achieving worldly success. It comes from walking closely with God, from aligning my life with His purposes, and from finding joy in the simple, everyday moments. It's in this place of divine companionship that I've found the deepest sense of peace and contentment. Inviting Others on the Journey This path I've chosen isn't for everyone, but if you're tired of the constant striving, if you long for a deeper connection with your Creator and a more authentic expression of your creativity, I invite you to join me. Let's embark on a journey together—a journey that leads away from the noise and frenzy of the world and into the quiet, restorative presence of God. Practical Steps to Embrace Simplicity and Creativity 1. Unplug Regularly: Set aside times when you disconnect from digital devices and social media. Use this time to engage in activities that nourish your soul and creativity, like spending time in nature, journaling, or creating art for the sake of art. 2. Cultivate Solitude: Find moments in your day for solitude and reflection. Use this time for prayer, reading scripture, or simply sitting in silence. This practice can help center your thoughts and align your actions with your faith. 3. Create Without Expectations: Allow yourself to engage in creative activities without the pressure of outcomes. Paint, draw, write, or play music simply for the joy it brings to your heart. 4. Serve Others: Look for opportunities to use your talents and creativity to serve others. This could be as simple as making a piece of art for a friend or volunteering your skills in your community or church. 5. Simplify Your Life: Evaluate your commitments, possessions, and habits. Look for ways to simplify and declutter your life, making more room for the things that truly matter. 6. Build Meaningful Community: Surround yourself with a community that supports and shares your values. Engage in conversations and activities that uplift and inspire each other to live authentically and creatively. 7. Stay Grounded in Your Faith: Keep your relationship with Jesus at the center of your life. Let His love and teachings guide you in your creative pursuits and daily actions. As we step away from the digital frenzy and embrace a life marked by simplicity, purpose, and deep creativity, we find a sense of fulfillment and peace that the world cannot offer. This journey may not lead to fame or fortune, but it promises something far more valuable: a life lived in alignment with God's design, brimming with authentic creativity and grounded in eternal love. The Creative Call: Why Artists Should Consider Starting an Art Business Rather than an Art Ministry3/11/2024 In a world pulsating with the need for beauty, truth, and hope, Christian visual artists find themselves at a crucial junction. The path they choose in structuring their professional and spiritual endeavors is more than a mere career decision; it's a declaration of how they intend to navigate the confluence of faith and creativity. While the allure of starting an arts ministry is potent, imbued with the noble desire to serve and inspire, there exists a compelling narrative for embarking on an arts business journey. This pathway is not only paved with promises of greater flexibility and profitability but also the profound potential to make an indelible impact on society. Here's an expanded exploration of why the profit-driven business structure could be the best choice for Christian visual artists over the conventional nonprofit ministry model. 1. Sustainability and Financial Viability At first glance, the concept of an arts ministry is deeply appealing, echoing the artists' intrinsic yearning to serve their communities and God through their talents. Yet, the operational realities of ministries, with their heavy reliance on the unpredictable streams of donations, grants, and volunteer efforts, often paint a challenging picture. These financial uncertainties can stifle the ministry's ability to grow, innovate, and even sustain its basic functions. Conversely, an arts business, grounded in the principles of commerce, operates on a model where sustainability is not just a goal but a necessity. Income generated from the sale of art, commissions, and related services ensures a steady financial base. This autonomy in finances liberates artists from the constant cycle of fundraising, allowing them to focus on their craft and its growth. A tangible example can be seen in my own life as a fine craft artist whose unique approach to sculptural basketry has not only garnered me much critical acclaim but also established a sustainable business model that supports both my family and my artistic endeavors while allowing me to help other artists as well. 2. Broader Impact through Market Reach One of the most compelling arguments for starting an arts business is the expansive reach it promises. Unlike ministries, which may inadvertently limit their audience to those within their faith community, businesses are driven by the imperative to penetrate larger markets. This expansion is not confined to Christian circles but extends to secular arenas as well, allowing the artist's message to weave through the broader societal tapestry. 3. Innovation and Creative Freedom The path of an arts business is one that brims with opportunities for creative exploration and innovation. Free from the confines of strict doctrinal guidelines and community expectations that ministries might adhere to, artists in the business realm can traverse a broader thematic landscape. This liberty can fuel more authentic, innovative expressions that resonate on a deeper level with audiences, both within and beyond the Christian community. 4. Professional Development and Networking The journey of an arts business is replete with opportunities for professional growth and networking that might be less accessible within the confines of a ministry. The business world encourages engagement with a diverse array of stakeholders, from clients and collaborators to mentors and peers across various industries. These interactions can be a rich source of inspiration, learning, and even partnership, fostering an environment where artists can thrive both creatively and commercially. While the non-profit ministry world also can have a variety of networking and professional development opportunities, so many of them are based on the development of grants and donations, rather than creating a sustainable business model based on market-driven opportunities. Additionally, non-profits are ultimately administrated by boards, not just by staff or the founder. That can create a whole other set of complications when it comes to how to grow and where to receive input. 5. Legal and Tax Advantages Navigating the business world comes with its set of challenges, but it also offers a suite of legal and financial benefits. The protective structures of LLCs and corporations can shield artists' personal assets from business liabilities, offering a layer of security that's critical in today's litigious society. Moreover, the array of tax deductions, credits, and incentives available to businesses can provide significant financial relief, allowing artists to reinvest in their work and expand their impact. Obviously, non-profits have the advantage of being able to receive tax-deductible donations from donors but in reality, that is often more of a dream. Grants are not easy to win and large donors rarely help small nonprofits with no track record of demonstrated success. Again, creating a business with a profit incentive gives an artist a much quicker and easier way to start building income and impact. 6. Empowerment through Ownership The decision to start an arts business imbues artists with a profound sense of ownership over their work and their mission. This ownership is not merely about possessing the rights to one's creations but embodies a deeper sense of control and responsibility over the direction and impact of one's artistic journey. Such empowerment encourages a personal investment in the success of the business, driving artists to pursue excellence, innovate, and expand their horizons. A notable example is the story of Thomas Kinkade, known as the "Painter of Light." Kinkade's decision to market his work aggressively through a network of galleries and partnerships with retailers was met with criticism from the fine arts establishment. However, this approach allowed him to maintain control over the production and distribution of his work, making his art accessible to a wide audience and securing his legacy as one of the most commercially successful artists of his time. Something that would be impossible in the non-profit realm. 7. Adaptability and Resilience The business landscape, with its ever-changing trends and economic fluctuations, demands a high degree of adaptability and resilience from those who venture into it. These qualities are invaluable for artists, as they translate into a capacity to evolve with the market, explore new mediums and messages, and withstand the inevitable challenges that come with any entrepreneurial endeavor. Because non-profits are run by boards made up of people with competing desires and visions for the organization, adaptability and change can often be seen as a threat and resisted, rather than embraced. While having a board can be a wonderful support to an artist, they can also be a frustrating factor that slows their ability to make the changes needed to adapt quickly to market and cultural needs. 8. Mission and Message Control Embarking on an arts business offers artists unparalleled control over their mission and the messages they wish to convey. This autonomy allows for a more authentic expression of one's faith and values, unencumbered by the expectations or limitations that might be imposed by a ministry or religious organization. Such freedom can foster a genuine connection with audiences, as the art becomes a direct reflection of the artist's personal journey and convictions. This concept is often embodied in the work of Christian authors who choose to self-publish. By taking control of the publishing process, these writers ensure that their message remains unaltered and reaches their audience as intended. This direct line of communication allows for a more personal and impactful exchange between the artist and their audience, enriching the overall impact of their work. For Christian visual artists called to make a difference through their creativity, the choice between starting an arts ministry and an arts business is laden with significance. While ministries serve a vital role within the spiritual ecosystem, the arts business model presents a compelling array of advantages that extend beyond financial sustainability to encompass broader societal impact, creative freedom, and personal empowerment. By choosing to embark on an arts business, artists not only ensure their own growth and sustainability but also amplify their capacity to inspire, challenge, and uplift through their art. In the dynamic interplay of faith and creativity, artists are presented with an opportunity to forge a legacy that transcends the confines of traditional ministry, reaching into the very heart of society with messages of hope, beauty, and truth. I've been thinking a lot lately about the journey we're on as artists, especially those of us weaving our faith into our creative expression. It's a beautiful, challenging, and deeply rewarding path, but let's be real—it's not without its myths and misconceptions. Artists, including those who are Christians, may encounter various myths and misconceptions that can hinder their progress towards becoming successful and thriving in their field. Here are some of the most common lies and beliefs that could prevent artists from achieving their dreams:
You've probably heard the old tale of the "Starving Artist," right? It's a classic but let me tell you, it's far from the truth. Being an artist doesn't mean you have to swear off financial stability. In fact, embracing some business savvy can actually fuel your creativity and keep you doing what you love, without the stress of wondering where your next meal is coming from. And then there's the whole "talent is everything" spiel. Sure, talent is a fantastic gift, but it's just the starting line. The real magic happens when we commit to growing, learning, and stretching ourselves beyond what we thought possible. It's about showing up, day in and day out, and pouring our hearts into our craft. I know some folks worry about becoming a "sellout" if they achieve any sort of commercial success. But here's the deal: making a living from your art doesn't mean you're compromising your values or your message. It means you've found a way to connect with people who get you, who are moved by your work. And that's a beautiful thing. Now, I've heard the concern from my fellow Christian artists about navigating the space between art and faith. Let me reassure you—your creativity is a gift from God, and there's no need to compartmentalize your life. Your art can be a powerful medium to explore, express, and share your faith in authentic and impactful ways. Collaboration might seem like a buzzword, but in the art world, it's gold. Working with others, learning from mentors, and being part of a community can open up new avenues for inspiration and growth you might never find on your own. Ah, the myth of waiting for inspiration to strike—it's a trap! Real artists know that creativity is a discipline. It's about showing up at the canvas, the wheel, the loom, or wherever your creative space is, even when the muse seems to be on vacation. Impostor syndrome is a sneaky little lie that tries to tell us we're not good enough. But here's the truth: your voice, your perspective, and your art matter. There's an audience out there that needs to hear what you have to say, in the way only you can say it. Recognizing the value of your own work and journey is crucial. Every artist has a unique voice and perspective to offer, and there is an audience for every type of art. Embracing your unique path can lead to genuine connections and opportunities. And for those thinking it's too late to make your mark as an artist—think again. Art is not bound by age. Your journey is unique, and every stage of life brings its own depth and texture to your work. Artistic success knows no age. Many artists find their voice and achieve recognition later in life. The journey of an artist is individual and can unfold at any stage, offering opportunities for growth, exploration, and achievement at any age. So, where do you go from here? If you're ready to push past these myths and step into the fullness of your calling as an artist, I've got just the thing. The Created to Thrive Artist Mentoring Program is designed to help you navigate these challenges and more. It's the easiest, fastest, and most effective way to achieve your dream of becoming a thriving, successful artist. Ever noticed how sometimes the most extraordinary parts of our spiritual lives start feeling a bit, well, ordinary? It's like when you've walked the same path so many times, you stop noticing the beauty around you. That's what scientists call mental habituation, a fancy term for getting so used to something that it doesn't excite us anymore. And let me tell you, it can sneak into our spiritual lives more often than we'd like to admit.
Think about it—those moments that once left us in awe, like a heartfelt prayer, a moving worship session, or those life-changing Bible verses, start feeling like just another part of our routine. It's like we're going through the motions, missing out on the spark that used to light up our faith. And before we know it, our spiritual life starts feeling a bit dry, like we're stuck in a loop. But here’s the good news: we don't have to stay stuck. God's given us some incredible tools to shake things up and see His world and His word with fresh eyes again. Art and beauty are like God's wake-up call to our souls, reminding us of the wonder that's all around us and in His presence. Art, Beauty & God’s Presence As an artist, I've seen firsthand how a piece of art can stir something deep inside us, pulling us out of our spiritual slumber and into a moment of awe and wonder. It's like a visual parable, speaking truths into our hearts in ways words sometimes can't. And beauty—oh, beauty is everywhere, in the majesty of a sunset, the intricate details of a flower, or the harmony of a song. These moments of beauty draw us back to the Creator, reminding us of His love and creativity. And let's not forget the power of simply being in God's presence. It's about slowing down, being still, and knowing He is God. It's in those quiet moments of prayer and reflection that we can break free from the routine and hear His voice in new ways. And if enjoying art, beauty and God’s presence helps, making art takes it to the next level. The Power of Making As anyone who’s ever felt the joy of making something knows, there's something almost magical about the act of creating art - especially when we connect with the Holy Spirit in the process. It's like we get to partner with God in a little bit of His ongoing creation story through our unique creative expression. I’ve known that power intimately for many years as an artist who creates baskets and sculptural works with natural materials like vines and branches. Walking through the silence and beauty of the forest causes my emotions to awaken, my eyes to be opened and my heart to be reinvigorated. When we're feeling stuck in a rut, going through the motions without really seeing or feeling much, making art can be a game-changer. And it's not just about the final product, either. It's the process of making that holds the real transformational power. When we create, we engage with the world in a unique way, paying close attention to details we usually overlook. Ever tried to sketch a flower or capture a sunset in paint? You'll notice shades, shapes, and textures you never saw before, even though they've always been there. This act of careful observation can jolt us out of our everyday habituation, making the familiar world around us come alive again. An Emotional Connection But it's not just about seeing more clearly; making art also taps into our emotions and thoughts in a deep way. It can be a form of prayer, a way to express what's on our hearts without words. As we mold clay, stroke a brush, or scribble a pencil, we can pour out our joys, our sorrows, and everything in between to God. It's a conversation, a dance of sorts, where we get to express and explore our inner life - our hopes and dreams, fears and failures - to God in a vulnerable and honest way. Co-Creating With God And let's not forget, creating art can also be a powerful reminder of our identity as co-creators with God. We're made in the image of the ultimate Creator, and when we create, we connect with that part of His nature within us. It's a way of remembering who we are and whose we are, especially in times when we might feel lost or disconnected. Reignite Your Inner Spark If you’re feeling a bit disconnected from the wonders of your faith or the beauty that surrounds you every day, remember, your own creativity could be a way to reignite that spark. Why not grab a paintbrush, a camera, some clay, a handful of vines, or even just a pen and paper? You don't need to be a "professional" artist; it's all about engaging in the act of creating. This process has a powerful way of opening our eyes, hearts, and minds, drawing us back into a vibrant communion with God and His creation. And it's not just about making art; it's about immersing yourself in all forms of beauty. Take a leisurely walk in nature, let a piece of music transport you, or get your hands dirty with some personal creative expression. These divine gifts are here to stir our wonder and rekindle our passion for the Creator who designed us for a life bursting with color and joy. Let's remember, our walk with God is supposed to be a thrilling journey, brimming with awe and discoveries at every turn. So, let's break free from the mundane routine, open our hearts to the beauty that's all around us, and dive back into the grand adventure of faith. Here's to rediscovering that divine spark and infusing our lives with vibrant, full-spectrum color! Artists were once again part of stirring the cultural pot with the recent Super Bowl commercials produced by the non-profit, non-denominational organization, Come Near. Personally, as an artist, I relish these moments as art fulfills its purpose of provoking responses and being a catalyst for change. HeGetsUs.com's Jesus commercials, seen by millions worldwide, aimed to invite those unfamiliar with Jesus to discover more about Christ, free from the often accompanying religious baggage of contemporary "outreach." As a result, they also significantly provoked many Christians, challenging them to see Jesus in a context diverging from their political or religious agendas—stances not typically embraced by today's religious zealots inclined toward politicization over Kingdom values. Why Did the Jesus Commercials Offend Many Christians? From my social media feeds and the numerous comments therein, it's apparent many devout Christians felt deeply offended, even angered, by these commercials. The pressing question is "Why?" Some felt like these commercials didn’t present the whole picture of life in Christ which demands repentance and external life changes as the result of an internal heart transformation. But for me, these commercials did what Jesus often did. They invited people to come and see what new life in Him is all about in the context of relationship and conversation before requiring anything of them. Something many in the church have lost the ability to practice. These commercials translated the narrative of Jesus’ compassion and acceptance for the afflicted and hurting into a visual form that demanded attention and reflection. Like any moment of Holy Spirit-induced challenge and conviction, it was initially difficult and often dismissed. Yet, such provocation is crucial within the Body of Christ, now more than ever. My belief is that it compelled many in the church to confront—for perhaps the first time in a long time—the stark divide between their personal perception of Jesus and His Kingdom and the reality of that Kingdom as depicted in Scripture. It questioned their loyalty to political and denominational allegiances over the Gospel's simplicity and the constant nature of God’s grace as bestowed through Christ. It challenged their preference for predictability and stability against the backdrop of our society's dire and varied circumstances. What the Gospels Reveal About Jesus Every Christian intent on living a Kingdom-focused life must earnestly observe, listen, and discern Jesus' reality as presented in the Bible, contrasting it with Western Christianity's modern preference for comfort, control, and political clout. We must regard the Gospel accounts and Jesus' narratives as they truly are: radical demonstrations of God's love and grace, extended most to those who deserve it least, in times when they need it most—an invitation to abundant, eternal life in Christ, extended even while we were yet sinners. The Jesus of the Bible loved and accepted people unconditionally. Invited them into His Kingdom unreservedly. This does not imply He ignored their sin but neither did He see their sin as a disqualifier for the invitation. The transformation people underwent with Jesus was the result of His love and acceptance, not manipulative pressure, cultural bias, or religious expectations. Indeed, He chose to serve those who opposed Him—Judas, who would betray Him, and Peter, who would deny Him. He chose to eat and fellowship with those whom religious people scorned. In fact, the individuals whom Jesus most frequently accused and called to immediate repentance were not the needy, hurting, and downtrodden but the religious hardliners and self-righteous power-seekers who saw themselves as more important. Yet, many in today's church often withhold grace unless it is met with instant repentance. What’s Art Got to Do With It? Art can be transformative and potent in this transformation process because it often serves as a supernatural, almost covert language - designed and used by God – that shifts perspectives, opens hearts, inspires wonder, and alters worldviews—whether it appears overtly Christian or not. It broadens our understanding of the world, prompting us to consider people, situations, and truths outside our comfort zones in new ways—essential processes God employs to shape us into His image and empower us as messengers of His Light and Life. Artistic works ingrain themselves within people's hearts and minds, creating a lasting legacy that hints at what could be in Christ for those willing to surrender their lives to Him. They herald and exhibit the reality of God's Kingdom, typically far from people's current realities, offering a space where, through the Holy Spirit, individuals can encounter God. They provoke repentance, present alternative perspectives, and invite people to a life full of new possibilities—seeing the world and others through Christ's eyes, loving unconditionally with His heart. Biblical metaphor in art has a rich history and should by no means be abandoned or seen as unneeded in this hour. But it is only one part of a wide spectrum of art that God can use to reveal Himself to a lost and dying world. We also need artistic prophets in every medium, style, and genre who go beyond the typical religious constraints of what many may consider Christian art. Artists who resist pandering to comfort-seeking and power-wielding audiences, opting instead to let God use them as blacksmiths, fanning the cultural flames, preparing for His transformative work. Artists who create impactful art without the constraints of overt Christian symbolism which can inadvertently obscure their art's core message. Artists whose work can draw people back to the Gospel's uncomplicated power to heal, transform, and liberate—inviting all who suffer, are broken and feel rejected to a place of life-changing love before they take any steps toward it. Artists who uphold the simple Gospel of Jesus that beckons everyone—everyone—back home to the Kingdom. Challenging Religious Transactionalism We must renounce the overly simplistic, transactional view of Kingdom life that is so often paraded as normal and embrace the beauty and mystery of our life in Christ as we seek to follow Him. Desiring every interaction with those who don’t yet know Jesus as Lord to lead to immediate transformation is often more harmful than beneficial, causing people to make pressured decisions they never intend to keep. Do we want every person to come to know Christ and experience His transforming power? Absolutely. But old religious paradigms that seek to force the unlimited mystery of life in the Spirit into a little religious box more focused on immediate conformity rather than an unfolding journey toward Christ is not helpful and at worse, detrimental to those who don’t yet know Christ as Lord. As co-laborers with Christ, we are instruments in His hands, sometimes witnessing instantaneous change and other times participating in the incremental stages of spiritual growth. All phases are vital, and we are invited to join Him in each one as we trust His power at work through us. Invitation to Mystery Many have accused artists who hold these values of compromise because of our commitment to trust the Holy Spirit to move through our art. But just because someone may not understand a piece of art or immediately see its impact on the life of those who interact with it doesn't mean God is not using or will not use it profoundly. This mystery is at the heart of the adventure to which we, as artists in God's Kingdom, are called. We need more artists who embrace this divine tension, trusting that God will use their creations for His glory in ways beyond and even in spite of our understanding. We need storytellers who depict the genuine nature, love, and redemptive work of Jesus, who tell stories of reconciliation, and who invite others to a transformed life in Him through beautiful, moving narratives—not just overtly religious ones. We are desperate for artists who shine a light on the world's dark places—the hurt, broken, marginalized, and wounded—often overlooked by a sanitized Christian culture. We need artists who create in partnership with the Holy Spirit, trusting Him for the outcome and believing by faith that their efforts will serve His purposes in the lives of millions. We also need faith leaders and believers alike who will make room for and advocate on behalf of artists as vital, contributing members of the Body of Christ who bring a unique and varied perspective to what can often be a community of conformity. Addressing the 'Woke' Critique Some criticize these creative endeavors as part of a 'woke' agenda, diluting Christianity and misrepresenting Christ. Something I find personally offensive. This reaction underscores the disconnect and perpetuates the church's fragmentation, trivializing the complex issues we face and the surrounding misunderstandings. Jesus led people into transformation through demonstrating His love and power, not politicization or control—and our calling is the same. To be prophetic forerunners who let His kindness lead others to repentance through us and invite them into a new life in Him. Despite my background as a politically conservative, charismatic Christian involved in church leadership, business, and the arts, I'm extremely disheartened by the church's severe deviation in this hour—favoring political rhetoric over Jesus' simplicity. We cannot allow the portrayal of Jesus to be confined to a politically driven, power-seeking faction, nor can we accept a solely social-justice-oriented perspective that negates God's power to transform and encourages people to look only to the levers of change this world offers. We need artists filled with the power and presence of God who will stand in the gap – to hold the divine tension – and declare to all who will hear “This is the way; walk in it.” (Isaiah 30:21) Coming Together In today’s divisive climate, I am more inclined to collaborate with those who demonstrate Christ's love in unconventional ways, relying on the Holy Spirit for transformation rather than advocating cultural or political ideologies. As believers and artists, we are called to maintain this divine balance, proclaim God's goodness, offer His love, and assist in reconciling all to Christ through His power. Can we have faith that God's love, when demonstrated in and through us, will unleash His power in the lives of others? Can we rest assured that Jesus will indeed reign in the hearts of the hurting when they are introduced to Him by those who love first, act with kindness, and welcome others in their imperfection without precondition? We can and we must for this is the ground where the Kingdom is sown and cultivated. Where authentic transformation and Christlikeness can flourish. Regrettably, research shows that society's willingness to listen to the church has waned due to the numerous competing interests that have tainted its reputation, resulting in its loss of influence within society. We need artists to bridge this gap. To invite all people to see Christ and His Kingdom in new, fresh ways that reach far beyond the stereotypes that have limited our conversations. My intention in writing this article is not to defend Come Near, a group I barely know, or their He Gets Us campaign. Before these Super Bowl commercials, I was scarcely aware of them, and surely, we don't align on every issue. However, on their website, they express a desire “to remind everyone, including ourselves, that Jesus’ teachings are a warm embrace, not a cold shoulder.” They invite people to “explore Jesus’ story on your own terms and at your own pace.” And they do so with humility, saying “Our campaign comprises humble perspectives from a diverse group of Jesus fans and followers with a variety of faith journeys and lived experiences bound by a common desire: to rediscover and share the compelling story of Jesus’ life in a new way. We will make mistakes. Like anyone with a public message or who sets out to share an idea, we won’t always get it right. Expect us to be human." And for that, I am thankful. I am eager to co-labor alongside anyone anywhere who is wholeheartedly seeking to witness Christ change hearts, irrespective of their perspective or preferences, without political or religious encumbrances. Those eager to unveil the real Jesus and the power of His transformational presence to a world in need. There's a middle path of authentic connection, demonstrated love, and supernatural transformation we must pursue—a mission worthy of dedicating our lives to, particularly through art. In today’s fast-paced world, where the pursuit of happiness often seems like a relentless marathon, it’s no surprise that many find themselves pausing, breathless, and questioning, "Am I truly satisfied with my life?" This question becomes even more poignant in light of a recent Gallup poll, which reveals a stark reality: less than half of Americans report being "very satisfied" with their personal lives. This figure, standing at a mere 47%, not only reflects a slight decline from the previous year but also teeters just above the record low observed in 2011. Such statistics prompt a deeper reflection on the fabric of our personal satisfaction and the threads that weave it together. Delving into the heart of dissatisfaction, one can't help but ponder the myriad factors contributing to this unsettling sentiment. In my 15 years of mentoring, a recurring theme has emerged: the misalignment between one's inherent design and the pursuit thereof. It's not merely about finding a vocation that aligns with our passions; it's about acknowledging and nurturing what has been divinely instilled within us. When this intrinsic design remains unexplored and unexpressed, the result is often a cacophony of frustration, anxiety, and depression. This isn't just about career choices; it's about how we choose to live our lives every single day, in ways big and small. The journey towards personal fulfillment and satisfaction is not about external achievements or societal benchmarks. It's an inward voyage to discover how we are uniquely crafted. Embracing this God-given design, investing in it, and pursuing it with fervor is perhaps the most profound step one can take towards holistic well-being. This path is strewn with opportunities, ideas, relationships, and encounters that resonate with our deepest selves, leading to what one might call "supernatural breakthroughs" and "divine encounters." However, the quest for fulfillment is often misguided, sought in realms that were never meant to satiate our deepest yearnings. The Gallup poll's findings underscore a collective yearning for more — more satisfaction, more fulfillment, more joy. Yet, the key to unlocking these treasures lies not in the external world but within the depths of our own being. The survey further sheds light on various demographic groups and their levels of life satisfaction. Notably, certain segments of the population — such as upper-income individuals, married adults, those who regularly attend religious services, college graduates, and older Americans — report higher levels of satisfaction. This data invites us to examine the role of socioeconomic factors, relational dynamics, spiritual practices, educational attainment, and age in shaping our perception of personal satisfaction. It also hints at the complexity of satisfaction, woven from diverse threads of life experiences and personal circumstances. In this context, the decline in satisfaction among Americans, particularly when juxtaposed with a period of economic uncertainty, raises critical questions about the relationship between economic confidence and personal well-being. The record high of 90% satisfaction observed in January 2020, amid economic optimism, starkly contrasts with the current landscape, suggesting that our collective sense of satisfaction is, to some extent, tethered to economic ebbs and flows. Yet, the essence of true satisfaction transcends economic conditions. It's found in the alignment between our innermost design and our daily pursuits. It's in the joy of discovering and living out our unique purpose, beyond the confines of job titles and societal roles. It's in the fulfillment that comes from nurturing relationships, exploring passions, and contributing to the world in ways that resonate with our core being. The recent Gallup findings serve as a clarion call to reevaluate our paths towards satisfaction. They remind us that in the pursuit of happiness, the journey inward is as crucial as the journey outward. As we navigate the complexities of life, let us not lose sight of the profound simplicity found in aligning with our God-given design. In this alignment lies the key to not just surviving but thriving, not just living but flourishing. In conclusion, the path to personal satisfaction and fulfillment is intricate, paved with introspection, alignment, and the pursuit of our true selves. As we reflect on the Gallup poll's revelations, let us embark on this journey with renewed vigor, embracing our unique designs and weaving a tapestry of life that reflects our deepest values and aspirations. For in this pursuit lies the promise of satisfaction, not as the world defines it, but as our hearts truly desire it. The journey we're all on as artists and entrepreneurs is a path filled with dreams, aspirations, and yes, a fair share of bumps along the way. But you know what? It's those very challenges that help us grow, build our spiritual and business grit, and ultimately, lead us to thrive in our creative callings. The Well-Worn Path Let's dive into this idea for a moment - think of your mind as this vast, intricate race track. Your thoughts are like these little race cars zooming around, often sticking to the same old loop because, well, it's familiar territory. But here's where it gets interesting. When you decide it's time to carve out a new path, to venture into uncharted territory, that's when you hit resistance. It's like an invisible barrier that pops up, filled with doubts, fears, and a bunch of negative chatter, all trying to keep you on that well-worn track. But here's the twist - this resistance isn't the enemy. In fact, it's a sign that you're onto something big, something transformative. It's an invitation to pivot, to take those unruly thoughts captive, and to start laying down new tracks in your mind. This process isn't a walk in the park. It takes guts, determination, and a hefty dose of what I like to call 'spiritual grit.' It's about teaming up with the Holy Spirit to renew your mind, to align your inner chatter with the truths and the incredible plans God has in store for you. Spirit-Led Visualization One of the most powerful tools in this journey is the power of visualization. Take some time each day to really immerse yourself in the dreams and visions God has planted in your heart. Feel the joy, the excitement, and the gratitude for the path you're on and the destination you're heading towards. This practice isn't just feel-good fluff; it's a potent way to counteract the resistance that tries to keep you tethered to the 'same old, same old.' And let's not forget the importance of celebrating the small wins. Every little step forward, no matter how tiny, is a victory. It's a piece of the new track you're building. So whether it's sprucing up your website, creating a piece of art that speaks to your soul, or finally hitting 'send' on that daunting email, take a moment to pat yourself on the back. Let gratitude and joy infuse your spirit, and let that be the wind beneath your wings as you soar forward. The Power of Community Now, I've got to give a huge shoutout to the power of community in this whole process. Walking this path with a tribe of like-minded souls can turn the daunting task of changing your thought patterns and habits into a shared, and much more doable, adventure. Together, we can lift each other up, hold each other accountable, and share the wisdom we've gathered along the way. As we wrap up this heart-to-heart, I want you to remember that the road to success, in art and in business, is rarely straight. It's a winding path, filled with ups and downs, twists and turns. But within you lies the incredible ability to pivot, to take captive those thoughts that no longer serve you, and to blaze new trails that lead to the fulfillment of your deepest dreams. So, my dear friends, as we journey forward in this grand adventure of creativity and entrepreneurship, let's embrace each challenge as an opportunity for growth. Let's build our spiritual and business grit, and let's shape ourselves into the best versions we can be. Together, let's pivot, persevere, and pave our way to a future that's brimming with boundless possibilities. In the tapestry of God's creation, each of us is woven with threads of unique talents, gifts, and perspectives. Our divine design is not a random assembly of traits but a deliberate masterpiece crafted by the Creator Himself. Recognizing and celebrating this unique God-given design is not only an act of worship but a pathway to fulfilling our role in the Kingdom's work. The Foundation of Divine Design Our journey in the Kingdom begins with understanding our identity in Christ, as highlighted in the manuscript. This identity is the bedrock upon which our divine design is built. Just as a building requires a solid foundation to stand firm, our lives require the surety of our identity in Christ to flourish. Once we embrace this new identity, the uniqueness with which God has designed us starts to shine, reflecting God's nature to all who encounter us. The Essence of Divine Design God's children are a reflection of His image on earth, endowed with gifts and graces to expand our capacity for influence and fulfillment. Our divine design is not merely about the roles we play or the jobs we hold but about embodying Kingdom transformation in the world. This design is a unique lens through which we view life, a perspective that shapes how we interact with the world, solve problems, and seize opportunities. When combined with a healthy identity in Christ, our design becomes a God-given superpower, enabling us to achieve what we could never do on our own. Fearfully and Wonderfully Made In a world that constantly pushes us towards conformity, understanding our unique identity in Christ becomes a beacon of hope and affirmation. The scripture from Ephesians 2:10 NKJV beautifully encapsulates this truth, "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them." This verse reminds us that we are not accidents or afterthoughts. We are God's masterpiece, His 'poéma,' where we derive the word 'poem.' Like a carefully crafted poem, each of us is a unique creative expression designed to reveal and release the nature of God into the world. This realization is liberating and empowering. It shifts our perspective from seeking approval and validation from the world to embracing our God-given uniqueness. Understanding that we are "fearfully and wonderfully made" (Psalm 139:14) allows us to step into our divine design with confidence and purpose. It's not just about accepting ourselves but celebrating the intricate details and gifts that God has woven into our very being. Our divine design is not a call to fit into a specific mold but an invitation to explore the vastness of God's creativity expressed through our lives. When we embrace this truth, we step away from the shadows of comparison and competition and into the light of God's specific calling for us. This journey of embracing our unique design in Christ is not just for our personal fulfillment but is integral to the work of the Kingdom. Each of us holds a piece of the puzzle, a note in the symphony of God's creation, contributing to the grand narrative He is unfolding in the world. As we walk in this understanding, let us remember that our identity and purpose are rooted in Christ. Let us embrace our divine design, celebrating the unique ways in which God has crafted us to reflect His glory and love to the world. Embracing and Celebrating Your Design To fully embrace and celebrate our divine design, we must engage in an ongoing process of discovery and affirmation. This involves:
When we embrace our divine design, we not only unlock personal joy and fulfillment but also contribute to the broader narrative of God's Kingdom. Our unique talents and graces equip us to serve in ways that only we can, impacting lives and drawing others closer to God. In the midst of a world rife with identity crises, understanding our identity in Christ emerges as a beacon of stability and truth. Our society, with its relentless demands and standards, often leads us down a path of self-doubt and confusion about who we are and what our purpose is. This is where the transformative power of embracing our identity in Christ becomes evident, offering not only a solid foundation for our faith but also a wellspring of strength to overcome the identity crisis so prevalent in modern society. Understanding Identity in Christ At the core of Kingdom living is the concept of identity. It's the starting point, the non-negotiable foundation upon which everything else is built. Our identity in Christ is a profound acknowledgment of the transformation that occurs when we step into faith. This transformation is not just a change in our moral outlook or a new set of behaviors but a complete renewal of who we are at our very essence. In the worldly sense, identity might be tied to our jobs, relationships, achievements, or even our failures. However, in Christ, these external markers lose their grip on our sense of self. Our true identity is rooted in who God says we are: His children, created in His image, and designed with purpose and intentionality. This divine perspective liberates us from the need for external validation and sets us on a path of living in alignment with God's plan for our lives. What Jesus Says About Identity Jesus' teachings and actions consistently affirmed the importance of understanding our identity in the light of God's Kingdom. He demonstrated through His life and ministry that our value and identity are not contingent upon worldly success, social status, or conformity to societal norms. Instead, Jesus emphasized the intrinsic worth of every individual, grounded in their relationship with God. The Gospels are full of instances where Jesus uplifted the downtrodden, associated with the marginalized, and affirmed the value of each person He encountered. Through parables and teachings, He made it clear that in the Kingdom of God, our identity is based on divine love and acceptance, not on our achievements or failures. Scriptures on Identity in Christ These verses offer a scriptural foundation for understanding our identity in Christ, emphasizing our new creation status, our sonship and heirship with Christ, our redemption and forgiveness, and the empowerment we receive through Him to live a life of purpose and victory.
Living Out Our Identity in Christ Living out our identity in Christ means embracing the reality of our transformation as new creations in Him. It's a daily journey of aligning our thoughts, actions, and decisions with the truth of who we are in God's eyes. This alignment empowers us to transcend the limitations and labels imposed by society and to pursue a life that reflects God's love and purpose. One practical way to live out our identity in Christ is through the renewal of our minds, as outlined in Romans 12:2. By immersing ourselves in God's Word, we allow His truth to reshape our thinking, guide our actions, and transform our lives. This process involves a conscious effort to reject the lies and distortions of the enemy and to replace them with the truth of God's Word. Another key aspect of living out our identity in Christ is through community. Walking in fellowship with other believers provides encouragement, accountability, and a shared experience of God's transformative power. In community, we find strength to overcome challenges, grow in our faith, and reflect the love of Christ to the world around us. Understanding and embracing our identity in Christ is the antidote to the identity crisis facing many in our world today. It offers a firm foundation for a life of faith, grounded in the unchanging truth of God's love and purpose for us. As we live out this identity, we become beacons of light in a world searching for meaning, reflecting the hope and transformation found only in Christ. For those seeking to delve deeper into this transformative journey, I invite you to explore the themes and principles laid out in my book, "God's Plan for Living: A Simple Roadmap to Your IDEAL Kingdom Life." Available on Amazon, this resource is designed to guide you further into the fullness of life in God's Kingdom, rooted in the secure foundation of your identity in Christ. In my journey through faith, I've come to realize that living according to God's plan isn't about adhering to a rigid set of rules or trying to decode a divine blueprint for every decision. Instead, it's about embracing God's IDEAL for our lives—a concept that beautifully merges our identity in Christ with our unique design, enabling expansion, alignment, and ultimately, a life steeped in His love. God's IDEAL for You: A Pathway to Fulfillment in the Kingdom When God created the world and humanity, He had a dream, an ideal. He envisioned a life for us that was rich, fulfilling, and deeply connected to Him. This vision wasn't based on mere hope but on a confident expectation backed by His omnipotence. He knew the plans He had for us, plans for prosperity and not for harm, plans to give us hope and a future. The foundation of God's IDEAL for our lives is built on five foundational principles: Identity, Design, Expansion, Alignment, and Love. These principles create a roadmap for living and thriving in God's Kingdom, much like the five smooth stones David chose to confront Goliath—not just tools for battle but symbols of God's provision for victory over the giants of fear, frustration, inadequacy, and doubt. Identity: The Cornerstone of Our Existence Understanding who we are in Christ is foundational. Our identity in Him is the bedrock upon which everything else is built. Embracing our identity in Christ means letting go of our past failures, disappointments, and regrets. It means understanding that we are new creations, defined not by our past but by who God says we are. Design: Embracing Our Uniqueness God created each of us with a unique design, a specific blueprint that reflects His creativity and intentionality. Our unique design isn't just about our talents and abilities; it's about reflecting God's nature to the world around us. When we embrace our God-given identity and design, we step into a freedom that liberates us from the pressure to conform to the world's standards. Expansion: Stepping into Our Kingdom Assignment Expansion in the Kingdom context is about stepping into the fullness of our God-given assignment. This expansion is birthed out of intimacy with God and is a natural byproduct of living in alignment with our identity and design. As we walk in faithfulness to who we are and how we're designed, God brings about expansion, multiplication, and promotion that extend His Kingdom influence through our lives. Alignment: The Key to Kingdom Effectiveness Alignment in God's IDEAL is about positioning ourselves in accordance with God's plans and purposes for our lives. As we align with Him, He provides everything we need in abundance, guiding us through seasons of refinement and growth. Love: The Glue That Holds Everything Together Love is the final piece of God's IDEAL, binding all other principles together. Kingdom living is rooted in love—for God, for others, and for ourselves. When we operate from a place of love, our motives are purified, and our actions are aligned with God's heart. Bridging the Gap Between Church and Kingdom Living The principles of God's IDEAL have implications far beyond our personal lives; they have the power to transform the church and the world. As individuals begin to live out these principles, an overflow effect occurs, impacting the broader body of Christ and society as a whole. This transformation leads to a church that is not confined to the walls of a building but is active in the community, serving, loving, and bringing healing and restoration in the name of Jesus. God's IDEAL for us is a call to a deeper, more fulfilling way of life—a life that reflects His original intent for humanity. It's a life marked by purpose, impact, and a profound connection with the Creator. As we embrace this IDEAL, we step into the fullness of what it means to be children of God, living out our divine destiny in the Kingdom. For those feeling the weight of the disconnect between church teachings and the reality of the Kingdom of God, I encourage you to explore these themes more deeply in my book, "God's Plan for Living: A Simple Roadmap to Your IDEAL Kingdom Life." Available on Amazon in various formats, this book offers practical insights and guidance for navigating the complexities of modern faith, helping you to reconnect with the true essence of Kingdom living. Discover God's Plan for Living on Amazon Embrace the journey towards a deeper, more authentic connection with God's plan for your life. Remember, the journey towards reconnecting with the Kingdom is not one of perfection but of perseverance, faith, and an open heart to the transformative power of God's love and grace. In the early days of my Christian journey, I found myself armed with nothing more than a new leather study Bible and a heart full of hope, stepping into a faith that seemed straightforward enough. Like many, I followed the path laid before me by others, adhering to the rules, avoiding overt sin, and hoping that one day, God's plan for my life would crystallize before my eyes. Yet, amidst the traditions I'd always known, a deep-seated feeling of discontent lingered—a disconnect between the promises I read in the scriptures and the reality I observed around me and within my own life. This discontent stems from what I've come to identify as "The Great Disconnect," a pervasive issue that I believe is among the greatest challenges facing the church today. It's a chasm that separates believers from the vibrant, abundant life Jesus promised—a life marked by signs, wonders, fulfillment, provision, and impactful relationships. It's caused many people to leave the church and for some, even their faith in Christ. But this disconnect isn't usually due to a lack of faith or effort on the part of believers. Rather, it's influenced by church traditions, societal norms, personal struggles, and, most significantly, misconceptions about faith. The Influence of Societal Norms Today's societal norms often stand in stark contrast to the principles of the Kingdom. The relentless pursuit of success, the glorification of busyness, and the emphasis on material wealth can lead believers to feel inadequate or unfulfilled. This societal pressure creates a backdrop against which our faith is tested, often leading to a diluted version of Christianity that prioritizes appearance over authenticity. Add to that the antiquated and often controlling way many churches operate and it's no wonder people feel paralyzed and unfulfilled in their walk with Christ. Personal Struggles and Misconceptions Personal struggles further complicate our connection with God's plan. Our battles with sin, doubt, and failure can create a sense of unworthiness, leading many to believe that the abundant life Jesus spoke of is reserved for a select few. This belief is compounded by misconceptions about faith—that it's a solitary journey of perfection rather than a communal walk marked by grace and growth. Moreover, the church, in its quest to navigate these modern challenges, can inadvertently contribute to the disconnect. A focus on ritual over relationship, dogma over discipleship, and performance over presence can leave believers feeling disillusioned and disheartened. Why People Leave Churches The departure from churches, a trend increasingly observed across the globe, isn't a sudden impulse but a response to a profound disillusionment. Many believers, despite their dedication and active participation in church activities, find themselves wandering in a spiritual desert, thirsting for an authentic encounter with the Kingdom of God. This exodus is not rooted in a rejection of faith but in a quest for something more—something that resonates with the depth of their spirit. U The Unfulfilled Promises and the Shift from Being to Doing One of the core reasons people step away from the church (and some, even their faith in Christ) is the gap between the promises made and their fulfillment. Many have stood on the church's porch, hearing the dinner bell of salvation and abundance ring loud, only to find that the feast doesn't live up to its advertisement. This gap between proclamation and reality breeds distrust, leaving many to question the authenticity of the church's message. The church, in many instances, has shifted its focus from fostering a deep, personal relationship with God to maintaining a checklist of religious activities. This emphasis on doing over being has led many to feel like mere participants in a religious routine rather than active, empowered members of the Kingdom of God. The Gospel of the Kingdom is not just a "come and see" invitation but a "go and tell" mandate. However, when the church focuses more on drawing people into services than on equipping them to carry the Kingdom into their daily lives, it creates spectators rather than disciples. Consumer Christianity and the Quest for Authenticity The rise of consumer Christianity, where services and sermons are tailored to entertain rather than transform, has left many yearning for genuine encounters with God's presence. This consumer mindset, coupled with a longing for prophetic words and emotional experiences, has overshadowed the call to mature discipleship and Kingdom living. As a result, both believers and non-believers struggle to see the relevance of the modern church in embodying the life and teachings of Jesus. The Call to Mobilize The church stands at a crossroads, tasked with the crucial mission to mobilize believers, equipping them to live out their unique design and Kingdom assignments. This mobilization is not just about active service within the church walls but about releasing the transformative power of the Kingdom into every sphere of life. As believers are empowered to walk in their God-given identity and purpose, the church will not only grow in numbers but in depth, impact, and authenticity. The departure from churches is a wake-up call, urging us to return to the heart of the Gospel—a Gospel that empowers, transforms, and mobilizes every believer to be an ambassador of the Kingdom. As we embrace this call, we will see lives changed, communities transformed, and the church revitalized, reflecting the vibrant, life-giving reality of God's Kingdom on earth. In conclusion, the journey towards reconnecting with the Kingdom is not one of perfection but of perseverance, faith, and an open heart to the transformative power of God's love and grace. For those feeling the weight of this disconnect, I extend an invitation to explore these themes more deeply in my book, "God's Plan for Living: A Simple Roadmap for Your IDEAL Life," available on Amazon in various formats. This book is not just a resource but a companion for your journey towards a more authentic, fulfilling faith experience. Discover the roadmap to a life aligned with God's Kingdom, and step into the abundant life that Jesus promised—a life beyond the great disconnect. I want to delve into the essence of Kingdom Living, a concept that has become muddled by modern interpretations and practices, moving us away from the simplicity and power of Jesus' teachings. This article will explore the core message of Jesus, the complications introduced by contemporary perspectives, the widespread disconnect from the abundant life promised in the scriptures, and how we can realign with the Kingdom's truths. The Essence of Jesus' Message At the heart of Jesus' message was the invitation to a life of abundance, rooted in a loving relationship with the Father, and manifesting the Kingdom of God here on earth. This message was straightforward, emphasizing love, forgiveness, and the inward transformation that leads to outward action. However, over time, this clear message has been obscured by layers of religious obligations, denominational preferences, and traditions that have sidelined the original promises of God, leading to a form of Christianity that often feels devoid of the dynamic power and personal transformation it was meant to bring. The Complexity of Modern Interpretations Modern Christianity, with its myriad of interpretations and emphases, has complicated what it means to live out the Christian faith. What was meant to be a vibrant relationship with God has often been reduced to a checklist of do's and don'ts, leaving many believers feeling stuck in a cycle of spiritual highs and lows, never quite experiencing the fullness of life Jesus promised. This complexity has led to a church that, while busy with programs and activities, often lacks the transformative power of the Kingdom. The Disconnect from Abundant Life Despite sincere efforts to live a "good Christian life," many believers find themselves disconnected from the vibrant, abundant life Jesus spoke of in John 10:10. This disconnect is not due to a lack of commitment or desire but often stems from a lack of understanding of how the Kingdom of God operates and how we can align our lives with its principles. The result is a sense of frustration, spiritual stagnation, and a longing for something more—something that truly transforms us from the inside out. Realigning with Kingdom Living The journey back to the essence of Kingdom Living begins with a rediscovery of our identity in Christ. We are not defined by our past, our failures, or the labels society places on us. Our true identity is found in who God says we are—beloved, redeemed, and called for a purpose. Embracing this identity is the first step toward living a life that reflects the Kingdom of God. Next, we must understand our divine design. Each of us is uniquely crafted by God, endowed with specific gifts and talents intended to reflect His nature and contribute to His Kingdom's work. Recognizing and embracing our unique design empowers us to live out our God-given purpose with confidence and joy. As we align our lives with God's Kingdom principles, we begin to experience expansion—growth in our personal lives, our relationships, and our impact on the world around us. This expansion is not just for our benefit but for the advancement of God's Kingdom on earth. God's Plan, My Plan As we delve deeper into the journey of Kingdom Living, a crucial realization dawns upon us: the path to fulfilling God's plan for our lives isn't a rigid blueprint that demands our blind compliance, but rather a dynamic partnership that invites our active participation. This partnership, rooted in the profound relationship we share with Christ, allows us to co-labor with Him in crafting a life that not only honors God but also manifests the fullness of His Kingdom through us. It's a dance of divine orchestration and human initiative, where our dreams and God's purposes intertwine in a beautiful symphony of Kingdom advancement. The Harmony of Divine Collaboration In the heart of every believer lies a unique set of dreams, desires, and aspirations that God Himself has planted. These are not random or incidental; they are glimpses of what's possible when we align our lives with God's overarching narrative for creation. As we step out in faith, making plans and pursuing the dreams laid on our hearts, we embark on a sacred journey of discovery, where each step is guided by the Divine. This journey is beautifully encapsulated in Proverbs 16:9, which reminds us, "In his heart a man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps." The Role of Faithful Stewardship Our role in this divine-human partnership is twofold: to dream and to do. Dreaming involves allowing God to plant the seeds of His vision for our lives in the fertile soil of our hearts. Doing, on the other hand, requires us to take actionable steps towards those dreams, all the while remaining open to God's guidance and redirection. It's a dynamic process of planning with God, not just for Him. As we engage in this process, we become stewards of the divine vision, nurturing it with faith, obedience, and perseverance. Navigating the Tension At times, the tension between our plans and God's guidance can feel like a tug-of-war, where the fear of missing out on God's best for our lives looms large. However, this tension is not a sign of opposition but an invitation to deeper trust and surrender. It's in the moments of uncertainty and doubt that our faith is stretched and our reliance on God deepened. The key is to remain rooted in our identity in Christ, ensuring that our plans are not just good intentions but are imbued with Kingdom purpose. The Unfolding Tapestry As we journey with God, embracing the ebb and flow of His guidance, we begin to see the tapestry of His plan unfolding in our lives. This tapestry is woven with threads of grace, redemption, and purpose, revealing a masterpiece that far exceeds anything we could have planned on our own. It's a reminder that while we may make plans, it's God's purposes that prevail, leading us to a life of significance and impact in His Kingdom. Purchase your copy today and take the first step toward a life of purpose, power, and abundance in the Kingdom of God. Remember, the path to Kingdom Living is not about adding more religious activities to your life but about aligning your life with the realities of the Kingdom that Jesus came to reveal. It's a journey of transformation that begins on the inside and manifests in every area of your life, leading to a deep, fulfilling relationship with God and a life that truly reflects His love and power to the world. As I sat down to write, I reflected on my own journey and the countless conversations I've had with others about the perplexing question: "What is God's plan for my life?" This question, it seems, is a universal cry of the heart, a deep yearning for direction and purpose that transcends cultures, ages, and backgrounds. For years, I lived under the weight of religious expectations and the relentless pursuit of a "good Christian life," yet I felt disconnected from the vibrant, abundant life Jesus promised. It was a cycle of striving, failing, and striving again, always feeling just out of reach of God's favor. But a transformative encounter reshaped my understanding of the Kingdom of God and ignited a journey of discovery into the heart of God's plan for me—and, indeed, for all of us. The revelation was simple yet profound: the Kingdom of God isn't a distant, external realm but a living reality within us, accessible and dynamic. It's not about religious striving or accumulating spiritual accolades but aligning with the truth already residing within us through the Holy Spirit. This alignment isn't a one-time event but a journey of continual growth, discovery, and transformation. How do we live according to God's plan? It begins with understanding that God's plan is more about being than doing. It's about becoming more like Jesus, reflecting His love, grace, and truth in every aspect of our lives. It's about stewarding the gifts and passions He's woven into our very being, using them not for our own glory but for His Kingdom. Finding God's plan for our lives is an intimate, personal journey that requires spending time in His presence, listening to His voice, and allowing Him to reveal the unique path He has for each of us. It involves a surrender of our will, a willingness to trust even when the way isn't clear, and a commitment to walk in obedience, step by step. What is God's ultimate plan for our lives? It's for us to know Him deeply, to become like Him in character and action, and to participate in His redemptive work in the world. It's a plan that is both grand in scope and intimately personal, inviting us into a partnership with Him that transforms us and, through us, the world around us. Does God have a specific plan for my life? Absolutely. While the overarching narrative of God's plan encompasses all of humanity, He also has a unique, tailor-made journey for each of us. This journey takes into account our personality, our gifts, our experiences, and even our brokenness, weaving them all into a beautiful tapestry of grace that reflects His glory. As you seek to discover and walk in God's plan for your life, I invite you to explore the insights and principles laid out in my book, God's Plan for Living: A Simple Roadmap for Your IDEAL Life. It's more than just a guide; it's an invitation into a way of life where every day is an opportunity to experience God's presence, to grow in His likeness, and to participate in the incredible adventure of Kingdom living. That’s the question most Christians struggle with and have had very little teaching on during their life as believers. Consequently, they are left feeling unfulfilled, frustrated, and confused when it comes to actually living the abundant life Jesus promised in John 10:10 NLT where he said “The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.” That rich and satisfying life manifests in the life of believers through one simple, life-changing strategy: the renewing of the mind. What Does 'Renewing of the Mind' Mean in the Bible? Simply stated, renewing your mind according to Romans 12:2 means interpreting life through the lens of God’s Word and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, rather than through the lens of your experience, woundedness, trauma, preferences, or the opinions of others. It’s a fundamental shift toward seeing the world, yourself, others, God, and especially what’s possible from a Kingdom perspective. It’s making a daily, moment by moment choice to choose the Mind of Christ which lives inside of us as new creations rather than operating from our soulish mind the way we did before we were saved. Why Does the Bible Emphasize the 'Renewing of the Mind'? Unless a Christian learns to renew their mind, they will continue to walk in defeat, struggle, and confusion, as they desire to experience a Spirit-led life yet, have no understanding of how or tools with which to see that life manifest. This is the predicament of most believers who live lives of religious obedience and obligation yet void of any real Spirit-led power. Without renewing your mind, the only two options are to wait, hope, and beg God to change you or to work, sweat, and strive on your own to achieve the results you so long to experience. Neither is God’s best. Renewing your mind aligns your mind with the truth of God’s Word by learning to recognize the lies of the enemy, replace them with the truth of God’s Word and then reinforce that truth every time the enemy comes at them with those same lies. In 2 Corinthians 10:5 ESV, God’s Word teaches us that “We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ…” Taking a thought captive literally means to capture or conquer that thought as you identify it and compare it to God’s Word. Does this thought agree with God’s promises over my life or not? If not then I cast it away—rejecting its influence in my life – and I plant in its place one of God’s promises from His Word. In 2 Peter 1:3-4, the Bible says “His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.Through these He has given us His precious and magnificent promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, now that you have escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.” Did you get that? It’s through God’s precious promises that we participate in the divine nature. Renewed thoughts resulting in new beliefs help you engage with God’s plan for your life because thoughts fuel your beliefs. Godly Kingdom-Focused thoughts are great fuel for your godly beliefs, while ungodly, fear-driven lies and half-truths fuel ungodly beliefs. Renewing your mind is not just a spiritual process, but a physiological one as well. When you intentionally change the way you think to align with God’s Word, it literally creates new connections and pathways in your brain to make that process easier and more preferred over time. Through the process of neuroplasticity, your brain can literally be reconfigured to align with the truth of God’s Word and thus create the solutions, strategies, and opportunities that best align with God’s plan for your life. Remember, in Proverbs 23:7 KJV “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.” Your thoughts (which ultimately create your beliefs resulting in your actions) literally create the boundaries of your life. If you want to experience a different life—the abundant life Jesus promised—you must learn to intentionally renew your mind. Renewing your mind can also offer significant assistance during times of spiritual attack by providing a powerful means of counterattack. It is a transformative process that enables individuals to cultivate a sense of peace within themselves through the power of the Holy Spirit. Despite the challenges faced in the past, the act of renewing has proven that living in a state of peace is indeed possible, even delightful. By engaging in the renewing process, individuals can effectively combat spiritual attacks and regain a sense of spiritual clarity, resilience, and strength. Renewing of the Mind: Ways to Renew Your Mind Today After helping many believers renew their mind to the truth of God's Word, I developed an easy process we call The 5R's for Renewing Your Mind. Here's how it works: Recognize: Intentionally “capture” each thought that comes into your mind and compare it to God’s Word and His promises for your life. Ask yourself “Does this thought that I’m having right now reflect what God’s Word says about this situation or does it reflect a lie that I know doesn’t represent God’s heart for me?” Replace: If the thoughts you’re having don’t agree with God’s Word, then replace them with promises from God’s Word. It can literally be as simple as asking the Holy Spirit to bring to your remembrance a scripture that is opposite of the lie you may be faced with currently. You can also just do a quick internet search for scripture verses based on the lie you’re trying to replace. Remember, thoughts are like seeds and whatever you allow to be planted in the garden of your heart will bring forth a harvest in your life. Choose your seeds wisely. Reinforce: Every time you are flooded with those same types of thoughts that don’t agree with God’s best for your life, simply reject and replace them with God’s Word. One way you can accelerate this process is to write down your newly created Biblical affirmations on note cards, laminate them and carry them with you for easy access. You can also post them in places that you see often like your office wall, your desk, your car, or even your bathroom mirror. This can feel tedious at first, but as you do so in the context of gratitude, faith, and expectancy God’s presence will infuse this process, making it become more and more natural. Visualize: God created you with an incredible imagination to see, sense, feel and create new realities in your mind before they ever come into the physical realm. It’s one of the primary ways we co-labor with the Holy Spirit to release His Kingdom in and through our lives. As you are replacing and reinforcing new thoughts based on God’s Word, imagine in your mind’s eye what it would look like, feel like to experience life within this new reality. This further stimulates your brain and accelerates your own ability to come into agreement with God’s best for your life. Affirm: Create affirmation statements based on God’s Word that, along with your visualization exercises, continue to reinforce the truth of God’s Word inside your heart. Over time, your subconscious mind will become convinced of the new truth you’re aligning your heart with, rather than the old way you’ve been living. You can absolutely live the abundant life Jesus promised if you master the process of renewing your mind including recognizing the lies of the enemy, intentionally replacing them with the truth of God’s Word, and reinforcing that truth through visualization and affirmations. As you do, you’ll be amazed at the double doors of favor that seems to instantaneously appear in your life simply because you came into agreement with God’s design for your life, rather than trying to make it happen all on your own.
No matter where people found themselves within the spectrum of art, one question remained: Is it ok to sell my art if I consider my inspiration comes from the Lord? To be more specific, the question was often “Is it ok to sell something that God gave to you freely?” As you can imagine, I definitely have an opinion on the matter and I hope this article can help clarify this for many of you out there who are struggling with this question. In short, the answer is a resounding “Yes”! However, not every artist is meant to sell their art and herein lies the issue. It really depends on a few things, namely how an artist approaches their creative expression. For the purposes of this article (Yes, I know that there is a lot of crossover between these and yes, I understand that I’m going to have to speak in generalities since every situation is different) I’m going to focus on artists who approach their work in 3 different ways: their own personal spiritual experience, hobby, ministry to others and vocationally. Art as Spiritual Experience For most artists, the practice of art making is something that is innate. They can’t imagine life without it. It’s an extension of who they are and when they are creating, there’s nothing else like it! There’s an emotional release, a rush of pleasure and feelings of overwhelming joy that are rarely found in any other experience. Many times, artists also make a deeper spiritual connection with God during this process. Either intentionally or unintentionally, the artist may feel a real sense that they are not creating by themselves but are rather receiving inspiration from the Holy Spirit and creating with Him. Although this is not an experience unique to Christians, I believe the Father is releasing more of Himself, more of His Kingdom and more of His nature to creatives who are taking the time to invite the Holy Spirit into the creative process. When artists of all creative mediums enter in to this process, it’s an intimate place. Art making becomes a responsive act of worship where their ideas, tools, skills and processes become yielded to the movement of the Holy Spirit within them. There’s no faking it because an artist knows when it’s real. For many, there’s no greater place of connection with the Father than when they are creating; writing a song, painting, singing, dancing, weaving or just dreaming. To downplay this experience would be a huge mistake because it’s this process of connecting and creating that is so visceral and transforming for each artist. It’s foundational to our experience and essential for our ongoing growth and connection with God. In this place of art as spiritual experience, there are don’t have to be any rules or expectations. The experience of creating with God with no boundaries is all that matters. Whatever comes out comes out. It’s all worship. It’s all valid. It’s all important to the artist’s spiritual journey. The artist probably has a vocation that provides income for them and spends their ‘free time’ pursuing their creative outlet. There’s never any pressure to sell or please anyone but themselves and the Lord. For these artists, growth happens as a result of a nurtured relationship with God and the art making process. There’s no timetable or requirements on how or when that growth happens. It’s art as worship, for the pleasure of creating and that’s enough. For more information on creating with the Holy Spirit (or what some call "Prophetic Art") check out my Definitive Guide to Prophetic Art. Art as a Hobby The good news is that all artists start here, creating from a place of passion, connection, and expression. There are usually no rules at this point, only a love for creating, experimenting and having fun! You can probably relate, am I right? The focus for most hobbyists is creating for their own personal enjoyment. You may find yourself pursuing your art at your leisure… when you have extra time or a few times a month. Many hobbyists don't necessarily have a dedicated studio space to create in and end up creating in the dining room or spare bedroom of their home (or if you’re like me, the back porch, garage, kitchen and the shed out back!) Most hobbyists enjoy the freedom of creating when inspiration strikes, once a week, a couple of times a month, or even a few times a year. They often continue to create because of the spiritual connection they feel when creating. Overall, being a hobbyist is an awesome place to be! When you approach your art as a hobby, you're doing it just for fun. Again, no strings are required - just an enjoyment of the process. The time spent in the creative process is just for you. Sometimes you give art away to friends and family, other times you may sell a piece or two every now and again. However, art hobbyists rarely count on the income from their art sales to live. Usually it's about enjoyment and making enough to pay for materials. Art as Ministry It’s rare that an artist creates in a vacuum without anyone knowing about their creative expression. For most creatives, we enjoy sharing our creativity with others – friends, family, our faith community – and that only heightens the experience of creating. Nowadays because of the rise of acceptance of art as spiritual expression within the Church, many artists are finding they have the opportunity to share their art with others through doing things like art shows, painting on stage, performing on their worship team and many other wonderful expressions of creativity. This is an incredible opportunity for all creatives to take what’s been happening in their private studio time with God and welcome others into that process. Instead of their art simply being a place of personal connection with God, now it also has the potential to become a vehicle for others to experience the transformative Light and Light of God through their art. As with most things that involve other people, sometimes this can get a bit hairy. What do you do when someone doesn’t understand or respond to your work in a way that’s life-giving for you? How do you receive compliments? What if someone has a major encounter with the Lord through your work? It’s never simple for an artist to put their creative expression out for the public to interact with because it’s not just about the work. It’s bearing your soul and allowing others to come into your special place of connection, judge it and many times judge you. Depending on how you’re wired, that can be exhilarating or a real emotional challenge. Many artists now days are finding real acceptance within their faith communities as they create in the context of worship. People are inspired by their work, it heightens their own spiritual experience and allows them to create with others. It’s from these artists with whom we work most at The Worship Studio. They mostly create as worship and for the joy of the experience, have probably sold a few pieces here and there over the years but mostly enjoy giving their work away to others as a way to encourage them in their own spiritual journey. Artists in this place often struggle with the concept of selling their work because they don’t understand how they can or should sell something that’s such a natural expression of their own heart and given to them by the Holy Spirit in the context of worship. For artists who are are creating for their own personal enjoyment and spiritual expression, I say “Don’t worry about selling you work.” Allow it to be what it is – a joyful, creative, spiritual experience that you’re sharing with others. Why put the pressure on yourself to sell or not sell when there’s no specific calling to move into vocational art making? For many artists who are, for lack of a better word, hobbyists, they tension of feeling like they should sell their work causes more frustration than anything which only impedes the creative process. I always encourage these folks to enjoy the process, freely give as you have freely received and don’t put undue pressure on yourself or your art making practice. Art as Vocation For most artists – especially Christians – who have moved into creating as their vocation, they still create from a place of spiritual experience and desire to connect with God through their own creative process. In fact, most, if not all began in a place of creating simply as a response to their own inner need to create. I call it the compulsion to make, always searching for something to do with their hands. These artists still value the joy, spontaneity and exhilaration of the creative process but at some point began to feel the desire to create as their vocation. It may have been the result of a prophetic word, a longstanding dream of theirs, the recognition that if they were going to keep doing this and getting better they needed to give more attention than just what they could do as a hobby or just because their work started selling and they followed God’s favor on their work. However it happened, did this decision to create for money diminish their spiritual experience? Was God somehow displeased with them because they were no longer just creating for the joy of creating? I believe the answer to that question is a resounding “No”! Growth in the Kingdom is always based on stewardship of the gifts that a person has been given, regardless of where they find themselves in culture. For the artist, this most definitely includes their artistic gifting and their ability to hear, sense, feel and receive from the Lord. Let me pause and say, however, that I don’t believe becoming a full-time vocational artist means you’ve somehow achieved the ultimate maturity as an artist or as a Christian artist. Many of the best artists around choose to create as a hobby, for their personal enjoyment and have other vocations that they pursue to make their living. Many enjoy this because it allows them to come to their art making with no boundaries, requirements or pressure. It’s simply art for their personal enjoyment, sharing with others and even worship. Other Considerations when Selling Art Artists who have chosen to move into art making as their vocation however, don’t have the luxury of simply creating for personal enjoyment, although there is always joy that comes from the process. They have to consider the salability of their work, how it’s marketed, priced and presented to the public in a way that represents their values. Vocational artists can’t give most of their work away because for them, this is the primary way God has given them to make harvest their financial provision. They have to think about things like dedicated studio space, gallery representation or direct retail sales, inventory, shows and marketing their work. These artists have to pay attention to who’s buying their work, why, for what price and to be used in what context in order to continue to grow and thrive. To be successful, a vocational artist has to be both artist and entrepreneur. There is no either or if an artist is to be successful in the marketplace. This is where a lot of Christians who are artists somehow jump ship. They have this notion that artists who have chosen the vocational art path have somehow sold their soul to the art devil and have lost the essence of creating from a place of spiritual connection. How ridiculous! In my opinion, that’s just a load of religious poppycock and emotional gobbledygook! No one would think of making this accusation to someone who gets a million-dollar business idea from the Lord yet somehow, because we’re creative our motives and intentions are called into question. Should a pastor not be paid because they receive inspiration from the Lord for their sermons and daily ministry? It is crucial for artists to sell their art rather than giving it away for several reasons. Firstly, selling art allows artists to establish a market for their work. When artists give their art away, they miss the opportunity to build a customer base and gain recognition for their artistic abilities. By selling their art, artists can create a demand for their work, thereby increasing the likelihood of future sales and even potential collaborations or commissions. Secondly, selling art provides artists with a valuable opportunity to establish their worth and build confidence in their pricing. When an artist receives interest from potential buyers, it serves as an indicator that their work is valued and sought after. This confidence is crucial because potential collectors can perceive an artist's uncertainty in their pricing, which can deter sales. By selling their art, artists can refine their pricing strategies and gain a better understanding of the market value of their work. Additionally, selling art requires artists to have a clear, concise, and up-to-date plan. Without a solid selling strategy, artists may find themselves waiting for others to discover their work, which is often an unreliable approach. Serious artists understand that they are responsible for their own successes and failures. Developing a comprehensive plan that includes marketing, pricing, and distribution strategies allows artists to be proactive in promoting their work and reaching potential buyers. Finally, selling art opens up the possibility of financial gain and sustainability as an artist. Giving away art, while well-intentioned, does not contribute to the artist's financial stability. By selling their work, artists can generate income, which can support their artistic practice, fund necessary materials, and enable them to invest in their artistic growth. Selling art rather than giving it away is essential for artists wanting to make a living from their art and make an impact in the marketplace. It enables them to establish a market, gain confidence in their pricing, develop a comprehensive selling plan, and ultimately achieve financial sustainability. By embracing the responsibility of promoting and selling their work, artists can take control of their artistic careers and pave the way for success. Vocational but Still Spiritual Yes, being a vocational artist requires a different skill set and thought process, but it’s no less spiritual for the artist who approaches their life and work as a Kingdom creative. Being a vocational Kingdom artist is a beautiful collaboration with God in which the artist has the joyful opportunity to see and agree with Heaven, co-create their experience with the Holy Spirit and enjoy the benefits of the Kingdom in their life while expecting transformation to be the result of their life and work. All along the way, they get to trust God completely for their provision, opportunities to sell their work and new creative ideas. I’m one of these vocational artists who did what I do creatively now as a hobby for 15 years before it became my primary income source. For me, this journey of becoming a full-time working artist has required so much more faith and connectedness with the Father than anything I’ve ever done. I have opportunities each and every day to listen, trust and cooperate with the voice of the Holy Spirit not only as I create art but as I create a life and a business that God is using to bring finances into my family’s life. I love the adventure of being a vocational artist and can’t imagine doing anything else. If you're interested in making a transition from hobbyist into art as your vocation, read this article about what I call "The Bridge" to seeing your dream come true. What is the Role of the Artist in their Own Success? The role of the artist in their own success and failure is pivotal and cannot be underestimated - especially for Christians. Artists, both serious and hobbyists, must recognize that they hold the sole responsibility for their own achievements and setbacks. Unlike hobby artists who passively wait for someone else to recognize their talent, successful artists understand that they must take proactive steps to shape their career. To achieve success, artists need to cultivate a strong sense of self-motivation and drive. They must be willing to put in the hours, effort, and dedication required to hone their craft and develop their skills. This includes actively seeking opportunities for growth and improvement, such as attending workshops, pursuing further education, or collaborating with other artists. This activity doesn't exclude our spiritual life or desire for Spirit-led direction, it enhances it and works hand-in-hand. Moreover, artists must also acknowledge the importance of building a support system around them. Successful artists often surround themselves with mentors and a strong network of individuals who believe in their work as is found inside the Created to Thrive Artist Mentorship Program. Both can provide valuable guidance, advice, and constructive criticism to help artists navigate challenges and maximize their potential. However, it's crucial for artists to understand that they cannot rely solely on others for their success or hoping that God will simply make it happen. While a support network is beneficial and a connection to the Lord is crucial, artists must take ownership of their own professional journey and partner with the Lord in the process. They must be proactive in marketing themselves, networking within their industry, and seeking opportunities to showcase their work. Essentially, the role of the artist in their own success and failure is multifaceted. Artists must possess self-determination, actively seek growth and improvement, and build a network of support. Understanding that they are the architects of their own destiny, artists who take responsibility for their careers are more likely to find fulfillment and accomplishment in their artistic endeavors. Enjoy Your Art No matter where you are as an artist – creating for the love of the spiritual experience, doing it as a part of your ministry or as a vocation – realize that God’s joy over you is the simple fact that you’re doing what He created you to do. As you grow and dream with Him, the ways you express and present your art will change. That’s ok! Enjoy where you are and enjoy the growth process without putting undue pressure on yourself to be someone you’re not. God has an incredible plan for your life and art whether you sell it for thousands of dollars around the world or offer it to Him as worship in the secret place. Just enjoy the Father, create with Him and follow His lead. You never know where things might lead!
It's a question that has plagued diversified creatives for as long as the internet has been a thing. And given the time, effort, and expense of setting up, tweaking, and maintaining just one effective website, when, if ever, should an artist consider having more than one website as a part of their overall marketing and communication strategy?
A Tale of Two Artists One of my podcast listeners, Lorraine, recently reached out for a little wisdom on this very topic. Lorraine is a two-genre painter, creating both flower paintings as well as custom pet portraits. As she was in the process of putting her website together, she kept running into issues of fitting both sides of what she does creatively under one "roof" on the internet. Again, it's a great problem, and one I've been asked about many times by the members of my Created to Thrive Artist Mentoring Program. My rule of thumb on this is simple. If an artist is doing two or more creative things related to their career as an artist, I encourage them to have just one website to showcase and market their artistic endeavors. In Lorraine's case, both of her creative genres are complementary. A good number of her pet portrait clients may likely be interested in her floral art, while a good number of her floral clients will have a beloved pet or two they may want to be memorialized through one of her custom pet portraits. So, when should you have two websites? Well, that's simple. When your second business, venture, or hobby isn't closely related to what you do as an artist. In situations like this, you may want to consider having two separate websites. I'll use myself as an example of when to do this. I have an artist website, where I showcase my baskets, woven sculpture, commissioned artwork, and the classes that I teach for other aspiring basket weavers. All of this information and my public persona as an artist lives under one roof at matttommey.com. I also have a separate website that talks about my life and work as a mentor to artists. MattTommeyMentoring.com is the online portal where I talk about my books, conferences, and my Created to Thrive Artist Mentoring Program. My mentoring website also houses this blog and all the episodes of my twice-weekly The Thriving Christian Artist Podcast. I found out early on that very few of my basketry classes or woven sculpture clients were interested in what I did as an artist mentor and even fewer of my mentoring clients were interested in one of my commissioned wall pieces. The two sides of what I do creatively and as a mentor don't necessarily complement each other or connect with the same set of potential clients. Making One Website Work For Everything You Do It all starts with your home page. A good home page will evoke a connection, inspire, and make your visitors curious enough to click and continue the journey through other pages on your website. A great home page will speak to the visitor's aspirational desires, bringing needs to the surface that you can solve through your skills and talents as an artist. So, in the case of someone like Lorraine who creates fine artwork, like her floral paintings as well as custom commissioned pet portraits, I always recommend having a couple of different “doors” on your homepage so that people can quickly see the full range of what you offer creatively. Redundant Intuitive Doors Get Opened Now these "doors" into the different sides of your artistic expressions should be both intuitive and redundant. The secret here is to make navigating your website easy for everyone, no matter how they like to journey through a website. So, for an artist website, that means giving your visitors access to the various sides of your artistic personality via text-based navigational links in your menu and through graphic links that clearly communicate the scope and variety of your abilities through amazing images of your work. Optimize Your Genre Specific Pages Once you've created that great home page that highlights everything you do creatively, now you need to turn your attention to the genre-specific pages your site visitors will be visiting. So using our friend Lorraine as an example again, she'll want to have a page devoted to her custom pet portraits and one focused upon her fine floral art. On the pet portrait page, I would encourage her to include past work examples that tell the story of her process. I would suggest she show examples of her source materials, like the photos she used in painting a portrait, show a picture of that custom portrait in process, and then finally a final shot or two of the finished piece, including one in situ if possible. I would finish out that page with information on the commissioning process and how a client can connect with her to get a portrait project started. Now since her floral art pieces are most likely ready to purchase, I would recommend that this page include pieces of currently available work, along with the prices, as well as examples of few sold pieces in their final homes when possible. Again, I would make sure visitors to this page on her site can easily learn how to purchase originals and prints of her art, as well as how to connect with her for a commissioned floral creation. Finally, creating genre-specific pages with unique pictures and descriptions greatly enhances your site's ability to be found on the internet. These become anchor pages for those topics and genres on your website, making them easier for your clients to find when searching for "custom pet portraits," for example. Experiences and Insights from Artists Who Have Created their Own Websites There are several experiences and insights from other artists who have created their own websites that can be helpful to those looking to do the same. Here are some key takeaways: 1. Utilize website-building platforms: Many artists have found success in using website-building platforms such as Weebly, Wix, and Square Space. These platforms provide user-friendly interfaces and customizable templates that make it easy to showcase artwork and create a visually appealing website. 2. Incorporate e-commerce features: Some artists have chosen to include e-commerce functionality on their websites, allowing them to sell their artwork online. Adding features like online galleries and shopping carts can provide a convenient way for art enthusiasts to purchase artwork directly from the artist's website. 3. Focus on creating a connection: Artists have found that visitors to their websites often want to feel a connection to the artist and their art. Including artist biographies, personal stories, and behind-the-scenes content can help create a sense of connection and authenticity. 4. Optimize for search engines: Artists have learned the importance of optimizing their websites for search engines, such as Google. This involves using relevant keywords, writing descriptive image captions, and including meta tags. By doing so, artists can increase their chances of being discovered by a wider audience online. 5. Seek feedback and make improvements: Many artists have engaged with their audience and sought feedback on their websites. This feedback can help identify areas for improvement, such as website navigation, load times, or overall user experience. Making regular updates and enhancements based on feedback can lead to a better overall website. 6. Learn from others: Artists have found inspiration and guidance from fellow artists who have successfully created their own websites. They often explore other artists' websites, analyze their design choices, and learn from their strategies for promoting and selling their art online. By considering these experiences and insights from other artists, individuals can gain valuable knowledge and make informed decisions when creating their own websites. How Can You Market & Promote Your Artwork Online? To effectively market and promote your art online, it is important to establish a connection between yourself, your artwork, and your potential audience. While I am not an expert in this field, I can provide you with some general recommendations: 1. Build an engaging online presence: Create a compelling website or portfolio that showcases your artwork, provides information about your creative process, and shares your story as an artist. This will help establish a connection between you and your audience. 2. Leverage online marketplaces: Utilize popular platforms like Etsy, Cartel, or other suitable online marketplaces to reach a wider audience and increase your chances of being discovered. Ensure that your artwork is well-presented, accompanied by accurate descriptions, and contains appropriate tags or keywords to improve visibility. 3. Self-publish a book: Consider self-publishing a book related to your journey as an artist, your techniques, successful projects, or even anecdotes from your career. This can create curiosity and drive people to search for more information about you and your work. 4. Engage with your audience: Actively participate in online communities, forums, or social media platforms that are relevant to your niche or art style. Share your knowledge, experiences, and process with others, and make an effort to connect with fellow artists and potential buyers. 5. Collaborate with influencers or bloggers: Seek out influencers or bloggers in the art and design community who may be interested in featuring your artwork or writing about your creative process. This can help increase your visibility and attract new followers. 6. Harness the power of digital marketing: Explore various digital marketing techniques, such as search engine optimization (SEO), social media advertising, email marketing, or content marketing. Learning the basics or collaborating with someone knowledgeable in this area can significantly boost your online presence. Remember, your success as an online artist largely depends on creating meaningful connections with your audience, effectively showcasing your work, and utilizing various online platforms and marketing strategies to expand your reach. What Should I Name My Artist Website? Almost 100% of the time, I recommend an artist use their name as their primary domain either your name dot com or your name studio/art/artist, etc dot com. You are the brand and you are who people will remember, not some obscure art business name you come up with. Market yourself as you, the artist and name your website the same. It's All About the People So whether you end up with one website or two for what you do, always keep your visitor, the prospective client's experience in mind. Your site should peak curiosity, showcase your talents, inspire and inform your visitor all while providing a clear, simple pathway for them to connect to you and the art you create. I hope this has helped. Thanks for reading. I make my living as a full-time vocational artist, speaker, author and leader of an artist mentoring group. Because of that dynamic, I get asked one question a lot in almost every situation I find myself. It goes something like this: "I'm a (fill in the blank) artist and I want to start selling my work (or start making money, start thriving, etc) but I just can't seem to choose a direction. I like everything. What should I do?" This question and ones like it encapsulate the dilemma in which many emerging artists find themselves; that is how to go from the proverbial here to there. How do I move from being a hobbyist to a more serious part-time or full-time artist. It's a big frustration for many that keeps them up at night, causes confusion and even anxiety about their purpose in life. However, it doesn't have to be that way. I want to compare and contrast the way hobbyists approach their art practice vs the way professional artists approach theirs. This is not to say that all hobbyists are immature or that all professionals have 'made it'... However, in my experience in working with artists and from my own journey, these attributes are true for many. Hopefully this comparison will give you some insight into where you are now and how to start moving in the direction you want... to be a thriving artist!
Now, let's delve into the importance of approaching selling art as a business rather than just showing art. If selling your art does not matter to you, there's no shame in that. God can still use your life and work to bring joy, fulfillment and impact. If you have a meaningful hobby, and perhaps this discussion doesn't resonate with you, that's fine. However, it is worth noting that I have yet to meet an artist who does not feel a sense of joy, validation, and inspiration every time they sell their art. Nor have I yet to meet an artist who doesn't dream on some level of their passion for art becoming a pathway to financial freedom, abundant fulfillment and greater impact. Most of the time, it's selling your work and creating a business as a thriving artist that becomes the vehicle for that to happen.
To Show Your Art or Sell Your Art? That is the Question. To truly thrive as an artist, it is crucial to understand that your art is not just a creative expression but also a product that needs to find its way into the marketplace. Just like any business, professional artists recognize the importance of working both in the business (their art) and on the business (the back-end aspects such as marketing, bookkeeping, sales, logistics, etc). By approaching selling art as a business, artists create a solid foundation for their artistic endeavors. They understand that their art is not merely to be shown but also to be sold. When the intention shifts from merely showcasing to actively seeking sales, it opens up opportunities for growth, recognition, and financial stability. So, as you contemplate your own artistic journey, take a moment to ask yourself: How am I approaching selling my art? Am I treating it as a hobby, or am I embracing it as a business? Remember, your art has the potential to thrive in the marketplace, and by adopting a business mindset, you pave the way for success. Explore the systems, tools, and strategies that will propel your art into the hands of those who appreciate and value it. You have the power to become a thriving artist, both in your artistic practice and in the business of art. When it comes to art marketing, there can be a lot of confusion about what works, what doesn't and where to start. Whether you're a seasoned, experienced artist who's been creating for many years or a hobbyist just trying to take it to the next level, knowing how to sell your art is of primo importance!
Art Marketing is about the "Special Factor"
I've had the privilege of creating sculpture both part-time and full-time for almost 25 years. After moving to Asheville, North Carolina in 2009, I opened a studio in the River Arts District and began selling my work full-time. Like a lot of artists, I did the typical things like running around to craft shows, selling wholesale to shops and "hoping" for customers. For me - and remember, everyone's different - that kind of selling drove me crazy! Shows were fickle, my work didn't sell great in stores or galleries because I wasn't there to talk about it and the hope strategy... well, let's just say that doesn't work. Hope is not a viable strategy for how to sell your art.
Thankfully, because of my background in marketing and the fact that I am a people person, I recognized early on in my full-time art career that people pay top dollar for 2 things: special and connection. What does that mean, you ask? First of all, people are willing to pay a premium for things they feel are out of the ordinary, unique or special, especially if they align with their values. Now keep in mind, we're not talking about your average Wal-mart shopper here. I'm talking about people who are genuinely interested in your art and have the means to pay for it. When your work and your reputation is seen as something to be noticed, something to be valued, not ordinary or run-of-the-mill, all of a sudden, people start to take notice. That's what happened to me. I create sculpture primarily for luxury mountain homes and I love it. One of the things I did to help leverage the "special factor" of my work was to make a decision to install all my own work (when possible) and ask if I could take pictures once installed. Consequently, I have tons of gorgeous images of my work in multi-million dollar homes. Now, when prospective buyers are considering my work, they immediately see "Wow, this guy's work is special... look at who's buying his work." It lets my customers know that I'm someone to be collected and considered worthy of a significant investment. Art Marketing is about Authentic Connection
The other huge concept I employ in my business naturally, because I enjoy building relationships with people, is connection. I've found over the years that people who are making a significant investment in a piece of art want more than just a commoditized retail experience. They want a relationship. By and large, whether it's buying my work or the work of friends of mine who are painters, sculptors, ceramicists, jewelers or whatever, clients who are serious about purchasing hand-made, original art really enjoy building relationships with the artists from whom they purchase. It's fun for them and for us to get to know them, what they like, what they like about our work and deepen that relationship over time through multiple purchases and referrals to their friends.
I have a studio here in Asheville's River Arts District which is open 6 days a week to the public. Nothing gives me more pleasure than to hear one of my clients coming through the door with a friend or out of town visitor saying something like "Oh, this is the guy I was telling you about..." All of a sudden, they've become my marketing department and a genuine friend. This same kind of connection is very important even if you're selling through strategic partners like interior designers or gallery / shop owners. Take time to go visit them, learn what sells in their stores, understand their clientele and then work to make them look great! I have a friend up who has a beautiful furniture store in a very wealthy area and she has a trunk show for me every couple of years. That one relationships has produced more than any other relationship in my art career simply because every time I go to that area, I stop by and say hello. I send flowers after a referral. I treat her customers very well. Yes, you guessed it: I'm building connection. How Can I Recommend My Art to Potential Customers Instead of "Selling" It? When it comes to recommending your art to potential customers, it can be helpful to shift your perspective away from traditional sales tactics and focus on the idea of sharing something you truly believe in. Instead of trying to sell your art, imagine that you are recommending it to a friend - someone you genuinely care about and want to enrich their lives with something you find meaningful. Think about it this way: when you recommend a great restaurant or a captivating book to a friend, your motivation is not driven by financial gain but by the desire to share an amazing experience with someone you care about. You want them to enjoy and benefit from it just as much as you did. The same principle applies to promoting your artwork. Instead of solely focusing on making a sale, put yourself in your potential customer's shoes. Ask yourself why they might appreciate your art and how it could positively impact their lives. Consider what makes your art unique, what emotions it evokes, or what stories it tells. By understanding these aspects, you can genuinely recommend your artwork to others, positioning it as something that would bring value and enrichment to their lives. When you approach potential customers with a genuine recommendation mindset, you create a more personal connection. Share the story behind your art, the inspiration that drove you to create it, and why it holds a special place in your heart. By communicating your passion and the value your art brings, you shift the focus from "selling" to connecting and sharing. Remember, recommending your art allows you to authentically express why it could resonate with others, rather than coming across as pushy or sales-oriented. So, let your enthusiasm shine through and guide your interactions with potential customers. Showcase your artwork in a way that conveys the thought and care you've put into it, highlighting how it could enhance their lives and offer them a unique and meaningful experience. When recommending your art to potential customers, focus on sharing something meaningful rather than solely aiming to make a sale. Approach it as if you are recommending it to a friend, emphasizing the value it could bring to their lives. By genuinely connecting with your potential customers and highlighting the unique aspects of your art, you can create a more personal and authentic experience for both them and you. How Can I Write Persuasively to Persuade People to Buy My Art? When it comes to persuading people to buy your art, persuasive writing plays a critical role. Marketing, at its core, revolves around the power of persuasion. In order to effectively connect with your audience and convince them to invest in your artwork, it is crucial to employ persuasive techniques. To begin, don't rely solely on presenting a list of facts or simply stating "buy this." Instead, focus on crafting compelling narratives that evoke emotions and resonate with your potential buyers. Share the story behind your art, its inspiration, and the journey it took to create it. By offering a glimpse into your artistic process and personal experiences, you create an emotional connection that captivates your audience. Furthermore, emphasize the benefits and value your art brings to the lives of those who purchase it. Highlight the unique qualities, the transformative effect it can have on their environment, and the emotions it can evoke. By emphasizing these benefits, you are not only appealing to their logical side, but also tapping into their desires and aspirations. In addition, incorporate testimonials or reviews from satisfied customers who have previously purchased your art. Hearing firsthand experiences and positive feedback from others can help build trust and credibility, reinforcing the persuasive nature of your writing. Moreover, consider using persuasive language and techniques such as storytelling, metaphor, and vivid descriptions. Paint a picture in the minds of your readers, allowing them to imagine how your art would enhance their lives. Use words that evoke strong emotions, creating a desire to own and display your artwork. Lastly, always remember the importance of maintaining authenticity in your writing. Be genuine and passionate about your art. Share your enthusiasm and let it shine through your words. Authenticity establishes a connection between you and your audience, fostering trust and making your persuasive efforts even more effective. To persuade people to buy your art, persuasive writing is key. By crafting engaging narratives, emphasizing the benefits of your art, utilizing testimonials, employing persuasive language, and maintaining authenticity, you can effectively connect with your audience and inspire them to invest in your unique creations. 3 Tips for Your Art Marketing
If you're wanting to employ the special factor and connection into your art marketing strategy, I'd recommend starting with the following:
But the question always comes up, "How can I market my art without being salesy?" Let me offer a few thoughts. As a creative individual, you are constantly in pursuit of finding your authentic voice and showcasing your work to the world. It's natural to feel vulnerable when putting your art on display, and you may have reservations about coming across as 'salesy' or overly pushy. Rest assured, there are effective ways to market your art without compromising your integrity. Thankfully, my background in marketing and my innate ability to connect with people have provided me with valuable insights into the art market. I have discovered that there are two major factors that drive customers to invest in artwork: the allure of something special and the power of genuine connection. Let's delve into the first factor - the allure of something special. People are willing to pay a premium for art that they perceive as unique, extraordinary, and aligned with their values. We're not talking about your average Wal-mart shopper here. We're referring to individuals who genuinely appreciate your art and have the means to invest in it. When your work stands out as something extraordinary, capturing attention and being valued as extraordinary, people take notice. In my case, as a sculptor specializing in luxury mountain homes, I made a conscious decision to install my own work whenever possible. This allowed me to capture stunning images of my sculptures in multi-million dollar homes. These images serve as a testament to the special nature of my work, instantly conveying to prospective buyers that my art is worthy of their investment. Now, let's explore the second factor - the power of genuine connection. Over the years, I have come to realize that customers who make significant investments in art desire more than just a transactional experience. They crave a relationship, a deeper connection with the artist behind the artwork. Whether it's my work or that of my peers in various artistic disciplines, serious art buyers appreciate the opportunity to build relationships with the creators. By getting to know them, their preferences, and what they admire about our work, we establish a bond that extends beyond a single purchase. This connection is equally crucial when working with strategic partners like interior designers or gallery owners. Taking the time to visit them, understand their clientele, and contribute to their success strengthens these partnerships and enhances the overall marketing experience. Incorporating the concepts of something special and authentic connection throughout your marketing materials is paramount. Remember, art marketing is not about simply selling your creations; it's about fostering genuine relationships with individuals who appreciate and resonate with your art. Your marketing strategy should be centered around building connections and highlighting what you know your audience loves about your work. By doing so, not only will your art thrive, but you will also create a loyal following of customers who value your unique creations. So, as you embark on your art marketing journey, keep in mind the importance of showcasing what makes your work special and establishing genuine connections with your audience. By following these principles, you can effectively market your art without compromising your integrity or coming across as overly salesy. Embrace the power of something special and authentic connection, and watch your art business flourish.

For many artists, the journey from passion to profit is fraught with uncertainty and financial instability. The notion that an artistic career cannot be both financially rewarding and creatively fulfilling is a myth that needs to be dispelled. Matt Tommey's latest podcast episode, "Unleashing Your Artistic Potential: Strategies for Financial Stability and Creative Freedom," provides a wealth of knowledge and practical steps to help artists transform their talents into a sustainable source of income.
Tommey, a successful basket maker, shares his insights into developing what he calls a "product ecosystem," a concept that involves creating multiple, interconnected income streams that align with an artist's unique skill set and divine calling. This strategy enables artists to maintain their passion and purpose while achieving the financial stability they desire. The episode begins with Tommey discussing the common pitfalls that artists encounter when trying to monetize their work. Many artists, he notes, resort to unrelated side hustles that drain their energy and distract them from their true calling. By chasing after these disjointed opportunities, they end up compromising their artistic integrity and the very passion that fuels their creativity. To counter this, Tommey introduces listeners to the idea of building a cohesive suite of products and services that are directly related to their art. For instance, as a basket maker, he expanded his offerings beyond just selling individual pieces. He ventured into writing books, conducting workshops, participating in shows, and creating online classes, all of which are tied to his expertise in basket making. The core message of the podcast is clear: financial provision comes through embracing one's unique design and purpose. Artists are encouraged to think strategically about how they can leverage their skills to create different avenues of income, from teaching and writing to licensing and online sales. These streams can grow over time, eventually converging into rivers of abundance that not only provide for the artist's needs but also enable them to bless others. The episode is filled with actionable advice for artists at any stage of their career. Whether one is looking to supplement their income, transition to full-time artistry, or scale their existing business, Tommey's guidance is invaluable. He emphasizes the importance of mentorship and community, advocating for his artist mentorship program, Creative to Thrive, as a resource for artists seeking personalized support and training. By embracing the strategies outlined in this episode, artists can move away from the unpredictability of sporadic sales and towards a more predictable and fulfilling career. Tommey's message is one of empowerment, urging artists to take control of their financial futures and live abundantly within their artistic vocations. In summary, this episode of the Thriving Christian Artist podcast is a must-listen for any artist looking to break free from financial uncertainty and step into a life of creative and financial freedom. By following Tommey's advice and developing a product ecosystem, artists can unlock the full potential of their artistic calling and thrive in both their craft and their livelihood.
As an artist in the digital age, your online presence is as crucial as the art you create. It’s a platform for the world to discover and connect with your work. Yet, many artists feel like their digital presence is akin to a tree falling in the forest—unnoticed. The latest episode of the Thriving Christian Artist podcast introduces the transformative potential of backlinks and a faith-based community for amplifying your art online.
In a realm where search engines dictate visibility, backlinks serve as digital threads that stitch your website into the broader fabric of the internet. These links from other websites to yours signal to search engines like Google that your content is valuable, increasing the authority and trustworthiness of your site. As your page authority grows, your website climbs the ranks in search results, leading to greater visibility and more visitors. The concept of backlinks might seem technical, but it’s a facet of search engine optimization (SEO) that artists can leverage without extensive expertise. By creating partnerships with other websites—be it art guilds, media outlets, or fellow artists—you can cultivate a network of backlinks that collectively boosts your online presence. Navigating the art show landscape can be as complex and nuanced as the art pieces themselves. For artists looking to showcase their work, success is often predicated not just on talent, but on the ability to strategically select which exhibitions to participate in. Understanding this critical aspect of the art business can be transformative for an artist's career, paving the way for connections with ideal clients and ultimately achieving the recognition and sales they've been aiming for.
Audience Alignment Art shows are not a one-size-fits-all scenario; each has its unique audience, reputation, and logistical challenges. A critical first step is audience alignment—knowing whether the people attending the show are likely to resonate with and purchase your work. It's about ensuring that the crowd the event attracts is actually interested in buying art, not just attending for the ambiance or leisure activities. Reputation Another aspect is the event's reputation and the perception it holds within the art community. This can significantly impact an artist's decision to participate. An art show's reputation among artists and collectors is a barometer for its quality and the likelihood of sales success. Shows renowned for high-quality art and serious buyers will benefit artists seeking to sell high-end work, while those with a more casual or craft market atmosphere might be better suited for artists with lower price points. Art Style & Quality The style and level of art presented are also determining factors. Shows vary widely, featuring everything from emerging artists to established professionals, and encompass a range of art forms, from traditional to contemporary. It is essential for artists to evaluate whether they will complement the show's aesthetic or stand out in a way that is not beneficial. Good Investment Conducting a cost-benefit analysis is indispensable when considering which art shows to invest in. Factors like booth fees, travel expenses, and the time required to prepare and attend need to be weighed against the potential return on investment. The goal is to not just recoup costs but to make a significant profit that justifies the investment of time, money, and energy. Logistics & Fit Logistical considerations are equally important. The feasibility of traveling to the show, the cost and practicality of transporting artwork, and the potential need to ship sold pieces to buyers are all critical factors that can influence an artist's decision to participate in a particular show. Need Help? For artists seeking guidance in this intricate process, mentoring programs like the Creative Thrive Artist Mentoring Program offer invaluable resources. With live coaching and comprehensive toolkits, such programs provide insights and strategies tailored to the contemporary art market. They can help artists navigate the complexities of art show selection, preparation, and participation. In conclusion, selecting the right art shows is a strategic process that requires artists to be discerning and well-informed. By understanding their audience, assessing the art show's reputation, and performing a thorough cost-benefit analysis, artists can make smart decisions that propel their careers forward. With the right guidance and resources, artists can transform their passion into a thriving business, making the most of each art show opportunity that comes their way. Today, we delve into the vibrant world of art shows, a seasonal highlight for many, and a topic ripe with both excitement and trepidation for artists across the globe. The Season of Art Shows: A Time of Opportunity and Challenge As we embrace the art show season, the air buzzes with potential. The landscape comes alive with events that beckon artists to showcase their work. It's a time when creativity blooms alongside spring flowers, offering a platform for artists to connect with potential clients and share their passion. Yet, beneath the surface lies a tapestry of fears and roadblocks that many face - from the daunting task of presenting one's work to the public to the financial and logistical hurdles that come with participating in such events. Confronting Fears: Rejection, Imposter Syndrome, and Beyond One of the most pervasive challenges artists encounter is the fear of rejection and criticism. It's a feeling that can stem not only from potential clients but also from fellow artists. This often goes hand in hand with imposter syndrome, that nagging doubt questioning one's worthiness and place among peers. Remember, you're not alone in these feelings. They are common among creatives, and confronting them head-on can be a transformative part of your artistic journey. Financial Considerations: Viewing Expenses as Investments The costs associated with participating in art shows can be significant, but it's crucial to reframe these expenses as investments in your career. High-quality shows may come with higher booth fees, but they also offer greater exposure and opportunities to connect with serious buyers. With careful planning and a strategic approach to selecting shows that align with your work and target audience, these investments can yield substantial returns. Logistical Challenges: Simplify to Amplify The logistics of transporting artwork, setting up booths, and managing inventory can be overwhelming. However, by simplifying your setup and focusing on creating work that is manageable for you to transport and display, you can significantly reduce the stress associated with these tasks. Consider enlisting the help of friends or family to ease the burden and make the experience more enjoyable. Engaging with the Public: Embrace the Conversation Many artists struggle with the aspect of engaging with the public during art shows. If you identify as an introvert or feel anxious about interaction, take heart. The key is to be genuine, share your passion for your work, and remember that those who visit your booth are already interested in what you have to offer. Small, authentic conversations can lead to meaningful connections and even sales. Time Management: Planning for Success Balancing the creation of new work with preparing for shows can be a juggling act. Start planning well in advance, setting realistic goals for inventory and dedicating specific times for show preparation. This proactive approach will help you avoid last-minute stress and ensure you have a diverse and appealing selection of work to present. The Power of Community: Thriving Together Perhaps one of the most valuable aspects of participating in art shows is the sense of community and camaraderie that can develop among artists. Rather than viewing fellow participants as competition, look for opportunities to support and encourage one another. This positive energy not only enhances your own experience but can also attract more visitors to your booth. Looking Forward: Continuous Growth and Learning Every art show, whether deemed a success or a learning experience, offers invaluable insights that can shape your future endeavors. Take the time to reflect on what worked, what didn't, and how you can improve for the next event. Embrace both the victories and the challenges as stepping stones on your artistic journey. In closing, remember that the journey of an artist is filled with both challenges and triumphs. Each art show is an opportunity to grow, connect, and share the unique vision God has placed within you. Let's support each other in this journey, remembering that we are all part of a larger tapestry woven with creativity, passion, and divine inspiration. Until next time, keep creating, keep thriving, and remember - you were made for such a time as this. Are you ready to take your art from a fun hobby to a serious business? I've got some tips to help you make that leap and set things up like a pro. LLCs vs. Corporations: Which One's for You? First up, let's talk business types. When you're turning your art into a real business, you might hear about LLCs and corporations. Think of an LLC like your art studio – it's your own space where you have the freedom to create, and it keeps your personal stuff safe if anything goes wrong in the business world. An LLC is super popular with artists and small business owners because it's easy to manage. It's like signing up for an art class that fits perfectly with your schedule. The Best of Both Worlds: LLC with S Corp Benefits Here's a cool trick: even if you start as an LLC, you can later choose to be treated like an S corp for tax stuff. It's like using a paintbrush that lets you switch between watercolor and acrylic modes without buying new brushes. Talk to the Experts Remember, I'm here to share my experience, not legal advice. Always chat with a tax pro (CPA) and a small business lawyer to make sure you're picking the best setup for your art business. Making Your Art Business Official Now, let's say you're selling your art and making some money. When tax time comes, you want to make sure the tax folks see your art as a real business, not just a hobby. The trick is to set up your business officially. That means having a separate bank account for your art sales and keeping track of all your expenses and income. It's like having a special sketchbook where you draw only your best pieces. If you made a few hundred bucks from your art last year, that's awesome! But to get the tax folks to take you seriously, you need to show them your art biz is set up properly. Grow Your Art Biz Step by Step Starting an art business is like learning a new art technique – it takes practice and patience. If you made $400 from your art, why not aim for $4,000? It's all about setting goals and working towards them. And we'd love to help you do just that. Keep Your Business and Personal Stuff Separate One of the biggest rules in business is to keep your business money and personal money apart. Think of it like keeping your paints organized – you wouldn't mix up your blues and reds, right? Unless your mixing colors on purpose, but that's a whole other conversation. When you sell art, the money goes into your business account, not your personal one. Join the Created to Thrive Artist Mentorship Program If all this business talk feels overwhelming, don't worry!
